Service of Light

Nine children from Cathedral School were invited to take part in a brief service of light yesterday at Southwark Cathedral. The special service took place in the choir and was attended by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.  The children led the prayers and lit candles.

The Prince and the Duchess were accompanied by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby.

We were so proud of the children who took part in the service and represented the school well.

If you were at the service yesterday please could you describe your experience.

  • I found it an extrodinary experience! Although it only lasted fifteen minutes I could really feel the holy atmosphere around me. I loved the echo that was made when the hymns were sung and the best thing was when Prince Charles turned to me and said “ well done!”

  • The Service Of Light was a little service at Southwark Cathedral. The two special guests that came were Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall. The Archbishop of Canterbury was at the Cathedral too. St Savior & St Olaves secondary school for girls gospel choir sang the song ‘This Little Light’ and they sounded amazing!
We lit candles and said prayers. Whilst we walked in a line, the congregation sang ‘Kindle A Flame’.
The service lasted around 15 minutes.

  • I accompanied the children to Southwark Cathedral for Service of Light, this was a wonderful experience although it rained all the way to the church, and by the time we arrived at the Cathedral the children were all soaking wet it did not dampen their spirits. They all smiled as the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall walked into the church.

They each carried their candles with such poise and precision , and read their lines without missing a word. At the end of the service the Prince of Wales paused for a few seconds and said well done the children. The Dean commented on their outstanding performance and the dignitaries cheered and clapped for them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr and Mrs Scott and all the staff at Cathedral school, as parents we probably don’t thank you enough for the love and support you give to these children. However, watching them yesterday with so much confidence, made me a very proud mother. Kudos to you all and the children

  • The service of light was an informal but special service. We read prayers and lit candles with Prince Charles and Camilla. I was very proud when Prince Charles said well done to us. SSSO (St Saviour’s and St Olave’s) sung ‘This Little Light of Mine’ . We also saw the Archbishop of Canterbury. He prayed for us and everyone in the congregation.

As well as taking part in this amazing service, we sung a hymn called: Hills of the North. As we walked to take or placed St Saviour’s school sung a chant: Kindle a flame to lighten the dark and take all fear away. It was a great service that lasted around 15 minutes and it will hard to forget.

  • Everyone was wearing really special clothes and we had to stand up to welcome Prince Charles and Camilla. It was an amazing experience and I felt honoured when Prince Charles said well done. Though it was short, it was one of the most amazing experiences in my life, seeing two more members of the Royal Family and the Archbishop of Canterbury. I shouldn’t forget the girls from St Saviour’s and St Olave’s for singing a fantastic version of ‘This Little Light Of Mine’, it really lit up the service and made everyone smile.

  • On Wednesday 13th December, there was the service of light at Southwark cathedral (on St Lucy’s day). The Prince of Wales – who at the end said a well done to us all – was there as well as the Duchess of Cornwall. It was an amazing service, and although it lasted only for around 15 minutes, I got to also see the Archbishop of Canterbury who prayed for us and everyone else in the congregation.

SSSO (St Saviour’s and St Olaf’s) sung an amazing version of “This little light of mine”, and we all thought that they sung it beautifully. As, we went up to say our prayers and light the candles, the congregation chanted “Kindle a flame”; after we lit the candles, said our prayers and said the Lord’s prayer, we sang a hymn called “Hills of the North”. We ended the service by singing the National Anthem. I loved the experience and I will never forget it.

  • The service of light was a small service about people that in the past year have had some sort of tradegy done to them or their families. The service lasted around 15 minuets. We lit candles meanwhile we also got to read prayers about what has happened in the past year. I was extremely excited when I first heard that I got to be a part of this service. I was completely shocked when I heard that Prince Charles and his wife Camilla(the duchess of Cornwall) were there. I was very proud when the future king said well done to us and so were all the other children who took part from Cathedral School. Saint Saviour’s and Saint Olave’s sang a song called ‘This little light of mine’ and they were outstanding. It rained all the way there but in the end, all the rain was definitely worth it. Overall this was a great opportunity and I will never forget it.

  • The service of light took place at Southwark Cathedral. It had taken place because it was Saint Lucy’s Day. During St. Lucy’s time, Christians were being killed so many hid in the catacombs , which was where dead people lay.St. Lucy was known to have worn a sort of crown with candle so she could use both of her hands to carry as much food as she could and give it to the people hiding in the catacombs whilst having the ability to see where she was going. Then the girls from St. Saviours and St. Olave’s gospel choir sang a lovely song called ‘This Little Light of Mine’. After that, candles were lit and we walked in a line singing a chant called ‘Kindle of Flame. Some of us spoke whilst the other put a candle on the alter. When walking back to are seats we sang a hymn named’Hills of the North’ Although it was short it was special and I want to remember it forever. We got to see Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as seeing the Archbishop of Canterbury. I was delighted when Prince Charles said well done and it made all of us smile.
