Observing and classifying materials

 

 

 

Class 2 have been working hard on their observing and classifying skills in Science. They have been observing different types of everyday materials and then classifying them by using a Venn Diagram. The class have learnt how to describe the properties of different materials and they used this new vocabulary when classifying materials.

Subtraction

Below is an outline of how to develop subtraction skills:

  1. Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number
  2. To link subtraction facts, 42 – 6 = 36 so 42 – 36 = 6
  3. Subtract 10 from any 2-digit number.

  1. Subtract 3 numbers
  2. Subtract any 2-digit numbers using the Column Method.

Class 2’s trip to the Tate Modern

Class 2 enjoyed their trip to the Tate Modern.

They passed the famous Globe Theatre on their way to the Tate Gallery.

When they arrived they met their guides for the day – two professional artists!

They, then, started exploring the gallery.

Then they started creating their own artwork.

They even linked their artwork to their Science lessons by exploring the property of materials in the art they created.

Below are the spellings for this week’s Spelling Test in Class 2.

The theme for this week’s spellings is using the ness suffix.

As these words are longer than usual, there will be only 6 spellings to learn, 3 root words and the 3 words with the ment plural.

There is an extension challenge to learn 4 additional words.

  1. Add together any two 1-digit numbers as quickly as possible.
  2. Add 10 to any 2-digit number as quickly as possible.
  3. Add together any 2-digit number to any 1-digit number.

  1. Add together one 2-digit number to two 1-digit numbers.
  2. Add together any three 1-digit numbers as quickly as possible.
  3. Add together two 2-digit numbers.

 

The tests will be on Friday 27th November.

Addition in Class 2

 

Class 2 have been working on addition skills this week and they have learnt how to quickly add 10 to any 2-digit number as well as learning how to identify patterns in addition facts, e.g. 4 + 6 = 10 and 40 + 60 = 100. Also, they’ve learnt how to add 1-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers using a 100 square.

Addition will be the focus for our weekly Numeracy Tests over the next two weeks.

Extension Challenge

  1. Learn related division facts, e.g. 10 / 5 = 2 and 10 / 2 = 5.
  2. Learn related fraction facts, e.g. 1/2 of 16 is 8 and 1/8 of 16 is 2.

The tests will be on Friday 20th November.

Planting bulbs at Southwark Cathedral

Class 2 planted bulbs at Southwark Cathedral on Thursday 12th November to help create a new display in the gardens. Every class in the school contributed to the display and Class 2 certainly enjoyed planting the bulbs. In the Spring, the bulbs will grow into new plants and there will be a colourful new garden display.

Snakes in the school!

Class 2 got to meet some very exciting visitors today. The animals from Reptile Life visited the school and the children were able to touch a snake, a crocodile, a tortoise and a raccoon. It was an amazing opportunity to see these wonderful creatures and to learn more about them.

The Twits

Class 2’s focus text for the Autumn2 half-term is The Twits by Roald Dahl.

The class will be reading through the story and using it to help them write more creatively. Also, they will be learning about grammar and punctuation through written examples from the book.
