Arithmetic – making money totals

Below is an outline of how to develop skills in making money totals.

  1. Find objects around the house to ‘buy’ and give them a price that is less than £1.
  2. Write down the smallest number of coins you can use to make that total, e.g. the book costs 72p and the smallest number of coins is three – 50p, 20p and 2p
  3. Try and make that same money total using four coins and five coins, e.g. 72p in four coins could be 50p, 10p, 10p, 2p.

Extension

  1. Calculate the change that you would receive if you bought the item using £1, e.g. the book costs 72p so the change would be 28p
  2. Make the change total using coins, e.g. 28p could be made with a 20p, 5p, 2p and 1p.

The tests will be on Friday 8th July.
