Online spelling resources

Dear families,

Here are some websites I hope you will find useful for supporting spelling practise in Year 2.

https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/lists_folder.cfm?Folder=67

Spellzone has lists of words containing all the spelling rules pupils are expected to learn in Year 2. There are also some interactive games on the site to aid practise. Our weekly spelling tests will indicate which spelling rules we are practising, so this is a useful place to look to find other words that use the same patterns.

Phonics Play has free resources as well as some which require a subscription. It is full of useful activities for reviewing all the phases of phonics, and includes our ‘best bet’ rule for applying sounds in spelling.

http://mrthorne.com/

Mr Thorne has video explanations of phonics, spelling rules and grammar. In Year 2, we are working on Phase 6 and reviewing earlier phases where appropriate.

I hope you find these useful, and many thanks for your continued support.

Phonics and spelling
Spellings set for homework will usually build on the phonics work from the previous week. Children should practise spotting spelling rules and think about other words that use the same spelling pattern or sound (phoneme). They should also practise using their words in sentences to build vocabulary and writing fluency.

In Year 2, we will be focussing on phonics phase 6 and reviewing phase 5 to ensure children are confident applying phonics in reading and writing.

Here are some useful websites, with a range of videos, interactive games and advice:
