Go Gamelan!

Well done to all of Class 2 who performed brilliantly this afternoon in our Go Gamelan project!

Gamelan is a form of music from Indonesia that accompanies shadow puppet shows. The children made their own shadow puppets, learnt to play gamelan instruments and learnt traditional stories from Indonesia. They also learnt lots of amazing facts about Indonesian geography, animals, music and puppetry. Members of class 2 confidently shared some of these facts at the beginning of the performance.

Here is a video of our performance. Please do share your memories of the event in the comments section.

I really enjoyed playing the music for my puppet show. It was exciting making my Sumatran tiger puppet. I really liked learning about Indonesia and having Aris come and visit us at school. We learnt a lot about the Indonesian animals. Aris gave us a book telling us some Indonesian stories – my favourite one was about an evil demon who chased a girl into a forest to catch her. This was because when she was 14 she had to be given back to the demon because the evil demon gave her to the mother because the mother wanted a baby. But she had some magic belongings and every time she threw them behind her something magical appeared, stopping the demon. The last thing she threw was a fish paste and it turned into a muddy puddle. The demon did not know how deep it was and stepped into it. He was smothered in the mud and everybody lived happily ever after.
