Science in the Kitchen

Stars of the Week: Chimamanda and Christina

This week, Class 2 used a food technology lesson to learn more about our science topic of materials. The children followed a recipe to make soda bread, while carefully observing how ingredients change their properties when mixed and cooked. Super Scientists!

If you’d like to try this recipe with an adult at home, look below the photo gallery for full instructions.

Recipe for Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients:
340g plain flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
290 ml butter milk (We used half milk, half yoghurt mixed together instead)

1. Preheat oven to 200C.
2. Tip the four, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing bowl and stir.
3. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk, mixing quickly to form a soft dough.
4. Form into a rough round and place the dough on a lightly floured baking sheet.
5. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.

Enjoy!
