Summer 1 – Week 3

Stars of the Week: Sebastian and Isabella

This week we have been writing persuasive texts to convince someone to live in Ancient Greece or not to live there. We used the acronym AFOREST to help us include persuasive language. Some children wrote that you should live there to join the army as you get your own weapons whereas others wrote you would get sent to war even if you didn’t want to go!

In maths, we have just finished fractions and started decimals (which are related to fractions). We know that 0.1 is one tenth which can also be shown as a fraction. It is just like splitting 1 whole into 10 parts!

We started to design our Ancient Greek mosaics in art and we look forward to making them next week!

Summer 1 – Week 2

Stars of the week: Olivia and Sapphire

This week, we have continued our focus on fractions in maths. We worked on finding improper fractions as mixed numbers and we found fractions of quantities and amounts. In English we continued our topic of adventure stories and Class 4 wrote some fantastic stories based on a green pot. Lots of children included many fronted adverbials and their work was packed full of adjectives and adverbs.

In History, we continued looking at Ancient Greece and found out about two city states: Athens and Sparta. Most of Class 4 would have rather lived in Sparta!

Next week, we will be learning about persuasive texts.

Summer 1 – Week 1

Stars of the Week: Marwah and Yvette

This week, we started our history topic of Ancient Greece. We are learning about this ancient empire that existed from 776 BC. We walked to our school timeline to find out who was around before and after them (they were around before the Romans!)

We have had a big focus on fractions and are going over concepts including equivalent fractions. We have been writing our own adventure stories in English based on artefacts of our own choosing.

We were very fortunate to have Dave from the Southwark Music Service teach us recorders. He will be teaching us every Tuesday and he is a very talented teacher so we are sure to learn lots!

Spring 2 – Week 6

Stars of the Week – Ethan and Maidie

We have had a very fun last week of school before the Easter Holidays. In DT, we made our mechanical posters. Some children made a poster about volcanoes where the lave would jump out of the top and some children made theirs about earthquakes. Some made the buildings move and some made the ground move.

In science, we looked at the water cycle. We applied our knowledge of evaporation and condensation to how rain comes down and then goes back into the sky to form clouds again.

We hope everyone has a fantastic Easter break!

Spring 2 – Week 5

Stars of the Week: Kosi and Sarah

In English this week, we have been revising our pronouns and apostrophes. We have been using them in all of our work while remembering our basic punctuation. In maths, we have been improving our ability to use the bus stop method for division.

We had a very exciting science lesson where we had an investigation to see how temperature affects the speed of evaporation. We found out that a warmer temperature will cause a tea towel to dry quicker than a cooler temperature which means evaporation can be sped up by warming something up.

In computing, we have been programming a scratch game where a boat has to go through a course led by a mouse. We have programmed sounds in the game and an event once somebody wins the game.

Spring 2 – Week 4

Stars of the Week: Diane and Helena

This week, we have done some assessments and Class 4 have worked really hard through all of them!

We had our first recorder lesson this week and everyone in their class got their very own recorder to learn with. We had our very own recorder teacher who is very talented and he will be working with us to help us learn.

In science, we continued states of matter and we looked at two new processes: evaporation (which is when water heats to become water vapour, a gas) and condensation (which is when water vapour cools to become water again). We had different experiments that we observed in the classroom and we wrote down the processes that we saw.

In this picture, we had ice that was melting on the cling film, warm water that was evaporating in the bowl and water vapour that was condensing on the bottom of the cling film.

Spring 2 – Week 3

Stars of the Week: India and Mariama

Well done Class 4 for settling back to school so well. It has been a strange start to 2021 but Class 4 have shown that they are going to persist through anything!

This week, we have looked again at addition and subtractions. We have mastered the art of using the column method and can now fluently answer questions. In English we have been looking at the basics again and are building up our writing stamina so we can write more for longer!

We had a fantastic science lesson where we looked at how solids can change their state of matter into a liquid. We found out that when a solid is heated to its melting point, it will become a liquid. To find out what temperature best melts chocolate, we put different pieces of chocolate onto foil cases and let them float in different temperatures of water. The hotter the water, the quicker the chocolate melted!

Autumn 2 – Week 6

Stars of the week: Anashe and Ethan

This week in year 4, we have worked on our argument skills and related this to Beauty and the Beast. We wrote an argument as to whether we think Beauty should free her sisters after they were frozen in stone for their vanity and selfishness. We had lots of different answers! Some children thought it would be cruel to leave them in stone so they should be allowed to walk around and others thought Beauty should let them go as they are sisters and family comes first.

In science, we have been looking at how switches work. We made our own switches and tested them in a circuit with a bulb, wires and a cell. Most of our switches worked and Class 4 had some really inventive ideas!

We look forward to next week where we will conclude this term and focus on problem solving in maths.
