Class 5 have been studying lots of different poetic styles in their literacy lessons. One style that had a strong resonance with them was the poetic style of Charles Causely.
Causely’s poems were often both autobiographical and metaphorical which gave them a richness that struck a chord with our class. He wrote about the death of his father (which happened when Causely was just 7 years old) in WWI and his own experiences of serving in WWII, and he articulated his feelings about these seismic events by writing metaphorical poems.
So we thought of a personal experience of our own that we wanted to articulate in our poems and then we thought of a metaphor that we could use as a vehicle to discuss this personal experience.
Read some of the thought provoking poetry written by the children in Class 5. Can you believe that these pupils are only 9 and 10 years old? Jed’s poem about the dangers of smoking written via a metaphor about Piper’s playing their pipes is a particularly impressive piece of work.
The little egg is hatching,
Oh, the tiny little thing.
At the time he was new,
He opened up.
He was a sort of a nut,
He smelt like cinnamon.
That was so an element.
The animals are here
My mother is a giraffe,
Ever growing up high,
Floating, floating, floating into the sky,
Waiting, waiting, waiting to reach the top,
Yet nearly, nearly rearing to a stop.
My father is a gorilla,
Swinging down low,
Waiting to find the wonderous glow,
He finds it yet still standing still,
But not as close, as a bluebird’s bill.
My sister is a fox,
Sly as can be,
Running so fast,
For that’s her key.
You can be what you want,
For I am a bird,
A bird is something that you’ve never heard,
But if you are what you are, and that’s alright,
You could fly up high like a big, blue kite.
THE DOG AND THE KITTEN
The dog sat down on a stone,
Sitting, looking, waiting,
The kitten sat down a log,
Waiting, looking, sitting.
The dog saw the kitten and ran over,
Pitter, patter, pat,
The kitten saw the dog and ran away,
Patter, pitter, pit.
The dog caught up with the kitten,
Yippy, yeppy, yoo,
The kitten mewed “Oh no,”
Yoopy, yeppy, yip.
The dog looked after the kitten,
La, di da, di da,
The kitten led a happy life,
Da di, da di, la.
Big hedgehog, Little hedgehog
Walking down the street
Big hedgehog screaming, Small hedgehog squeaking
Hunting things to eat.
Big hedgehog, Little hedgehog
Fighting over food
Big hedgehog full, Small hedgehog starving
Small hedgehog’s now in a bad mood.
Big hedgehog, Little hedgehog
Hurting from a fight
Big hedgehog grumpy, Small hedgehog crying
Small hedgehog cries through the night.
Big hedgehog, Little hedgehog
Both needing a hug
They run to each other
And both fall to the rug.
I saw a bouncy rabbit
I saw a bouncy rabbit
Jumping around and having fun
Never stopping but screaming everyday
How much noise will we hear today?
I saw a very happy rabbit
Playing happily
And sleeping tight
Ready for the next day
I saw a very chatty rabbit
Talking all day
But eating deeply
Oh, the food is yummy
I saw a very bouncy rabbit
Looking at me so jolly
When she came to school she was ever so cute
Everyday you’ll see
Come to my house with a friend or two…
My mum and sister
My mum is very funny
My sister is very weird
The thing I like about my sister is that she’s comforting
My mum loves cooking
My sister is good at art
My mum is very kind as the powerful wind blows
I describe my mum and sister of spring
The reason is she’s just like spring
My sister is very happy
My mum is very busy
Even though she’s always busy it doesn’t mean that we’re always separated.
A baby chick
A baby chick waddling along
2 little steps at a time.
Falling over again and again
Always chirping.
Eating and crying
So golden feathers.
Always washing never blushing.
Always ever eating.
Looking laughing and all sorts
I saw a chick
I saw a chick cracking out of an egg
Opening like a flower
He likes to hang on a peg
He’s got lots of power
I saw a chick bobbing along look for some food
Butting his head in a picnic basket
He didn’t find anything and now has got a big mood
I saw a chick laughing and crying
A bit like a rainbow
The chick flew right into my arms
And had a smile just like a rainbow.

A Happy Flower
It was a sunny day,
A happy jolly flower just kept on opening,
He couldn’t stop being jolly,
He was a good flower.
The flower always made people happy,
The flower always had a smile,
People were always happy,
They would always look at the happy flower
The flower was also very kind,
He liked to dream about happy things,
And even though he goes to sleep his flower would still open up,
And because the flower was always happy it made the colourful rainbow happy too.
Every flower was happy,
Just because of one flower,
Who was also kind and jolly,
Everyone like the nice flower.
Everyone never gets sad,
Because of the flower,
The happy flower will always make everyone happy,
And he will always,
Forever and ever!

I saw a bunny by Ayisat
My poem is about my niece and the metaphor is a bunny making my family happy.
I saw a bunny,
Chewing her carrots,
Sleeping heavily
Crying out loud.
I saw a bunny,
Laughing deviously,
Smiling beautifully,
Loving powerfully.
I saw a bunny,
Looking at me with her cute little eyes,
Jumping up in to my arms,
Making me warm with her cuddly fur.
I saw a bunny,
Saying “follow me, follow me”,
I followed,
In under an hour.
I saw a bunny,
Shouting “adopt me,adopt me”
I replied “I’m only 9, but don’t worry,
Your my niece and where ever I go I will always miss you.
Every time I come to Wingmore, Kent, Eleanor Court,
I always pass the Lost Gardens of Helena.
They are so lost only I know about it,
Oh how I love to go to the old Court of Eleanor.
Every time I come to Wingmore, Kent, Eleanor Court,
I always enter the gates into the lost gardens of Helena.
From gorges smelling roses, to gates open wide,
I will never forget my home in the old Court of Eleanor.
Christmas
A river flowed through a forest,
It was cold, chilly and really breezy,
He looked at a red ribbon tree with lights,
With bright decorations all over.
The river was confused but moved on,
It got colder but the wind got stronger,
Deeper, through the forest it became noon,
The river still travelled till it stopped,
A table with fresh meat and veg was laid,
With potatoes and yorkshires,
The river was confused but moved on,
It got colder but the wind got stronger,
My sister
This is a girl called Kaiya,
She is my sister,
She’s like a rainbow and sometimes like a storm.
When she’s crying, she is like rain,
When i am crying we are the same,
When she is angry she’s a storm,
She storms around throwing pencils\toys,
anything my sister does she makes so much noise, When she is giggling and still has tears on her face ,
She is a rainbow coming out with a slow pace.
When my sister sleeps she softly snores
when she suddenly wakes up the sky,
it makes me feel high.
I love rainbows, i love stars ,
but i love my sister part of my heart.

WHAT WILL YOUR POEM BE ABOUT?
My poem will be about the small town of Jarvis Brook where my Grandma lives.
WHAT METAPHOR WILL YOU USE?
My metaphor will be the seasons changing.
WHAT DOES YOUR POEM MEAN?
My poem is about a rose. The rose is Jarvis Brook and it is helping other people to grow and become better and beautiful. It is an inspiring town which is life-changing in a good way.
SO HERE IS MY POEM!:
Jarvis Brook!
The leaves they flow, and drop to the ground.
The winter chill closes in on the earth .
But among the snow covered valleys,
There is a deep purple flower, blooming even though the weather is harsh.
There is no snow around the plant, not one drop what so ever.
But around the beautiful creation young shoots are bursting up.
This rose which I talk about is helping others to grow strong like the first.
And when the shoots grow, they surround the rose equally,in the perfect place.
So when the sweet spring follows after,
The roses are there evermore,
Caring for others and making the earth more beautiful than humans could ever imagine.
It melts the snow for the newborn chicks and bunnies.

My Grandad
My grandad holding my hand
My grandad looking at me
He tells me things I do not know
But why do I have to show.
Every day I’m with him he shines so bright
He makes flowers grow
At Christmas I play with snow
And I can see that special grow
The sun comes out and the flowere rise
And the snow melts
And I can see that special grow
A flower blooming from the first pitch of light
The grass grows up as I wake up
I can always see that significant sparkle
I love him more than gold or silver

Caterpillar,chyrisalis,Butterfly
Here came a little caterpillar
Looking for some leaves,
Getting bigger and fatter
Among the greenwood trees
Here came a little caterpillar
Hanging from a branch,
No doubt that he is tired
Looking like he’s going to launch
Here came a little caterpillar
In a chrysalis up so high,
It couldn’t move, he couldn’t see
It din’t even wave goodbye
Here came a little butterfly
Flying over head,
It looks like my little caterpillar
He’s probably going to bed.
The lonely tree
Christmas is a lovely time of year,
There’s always dancing bears everywhere,
What I don’t like is that there’s snow everywhere!
Well it’s time for presents,
Oh goody,
Well I’ve opened all my presents.
Oh don’t forget me,
Oh sorry I forgot you present I will never forget again,
Well I hope you’ve learnt to not leave you presents the next time.
Christmas christmas here we are
The leaves crunching on the ground
The stars in the sky shining brightly
sparkly like silver ear rings
The snow gathering softly like the wind.
PIPER’S PIPING
Piper’s piping down the street
Piper’s piping dangerously
Running down Orlando street
Dancing around happily
Piper’s piping never stop
Piper’s piping tobacco drop’s
Never wonder what would happen
If they choked on raw tobacco
Piper’s piping need to stop
Piper’s piping wether or not
They still continue till they drop
Even if I told them not
THE WORMY FEAST
The wormy feast with two small birds,
Their chicks are tweeting like a herd.
Next to a leaf on a dark brown branch,
Is a nest of chicks and two small birds.
When the feast is over,
The birds get their clovers.
Inside the clovers are juicy worms,
Twisting and turning like they own a firm.
When they get their clovers,
They tweet like mad.
Then they decorate the leaf,
While doing it the are very glad.
My sister saw a bird learning how to fly
My sister saw a bird learning how to fly,
It was so very high,
I tried to feed it with a pie,
But I just couldn’t reach the sky!
She went inside because of the heat,
She also needed to wash her smelly feet,
And then she would dry it on a sheet,
Now the weather is pouring down in sleet!
She came back out when there was rain,
It was so so hard that she could feel the pain,
Crazily, it was insane,
She ran quickly on to a plane!
The bird came out once again full of smoke,
She took a deep breathe but still heard a choke,
She went in and grabbed some coke,
And tasted some artichoke!
She told her sister,
That it was getting mister,
Then came along a Mr.
And said that they had to go quicker!
On a cold winters night,
A family put on a fire,
They didn’t the chimney was blocked,
And randomly threw in a tyre.
Yes they locked locked the door put on the fire,
The smoke was black they didn’t know,
And when they came looking for a gown.
It was filled with black smoke,
Daniel the dad ran back,
And said it was filled with black smoke,
They screamed,
And drank some coke.
On the table,
On the chair,
A woman was screaming,
And her name was Mare.
Never in there life,
Had that happened,
they tried to run,
But choked.
To die they didn’t want,
When there home was filled with smoke,
Mare ran to the kitchen,
And ate an artichoke!
I like
I like the way my brother smiles,
As the water changes,
The yeas go by,
The seasons blossom.
The water bangs agints my head,
My head the Sumer,
Heat on the zanier,
As the rain makes him grow.
As the seageals dive for fish,
The Sumer comes,
When the water dissapers,
I start to cry.

I like running,

I can run faster than a rat,
stonger than a cat.

Christmas,oh Christmas,
Why can’t I wait,
It’s just tomorrow,
I can wait.
It’s time to go to bed,
Oh I wish I had my presents,
Oh I really wish ,
I hope I have a wish.
It’s just tomorrow,it’s just tomorrow,
I can wait,
Can’t I,
No I can’t.
Keep my brain
In a bag
To outer space.
Hold on,
I’ve completely forgotten everything,
What was I thinking of again,
Oh yeah,I was thinking of Ben the chicken,
SLAP?
no I wasn’t thinking of Ben the chicken,
Oh no?
Maybe my brain did fly to outer space,
OH,NO,THAT WISH CAME TRUE.
Oh I demand my brain to come back.
The brain came back
And up went the wheeze lee
And then?
Grrrrrrrrrrohhhhhhhhhgrrrrrrrrroooooo
And then BING DOWY BOING.
Rrrrrrrr who turned the music on.
