IT’S A FIRST – YOU GET TO ORGANISE OUR CLASS TRIP

image image image In the next few days I should be able to book our class a visit to the Science Museum. If you haven’t visited the museum then you’re in for a treat. It’s a genuinely world class museum and it provides many fascinating educational opportunities. But the question I’ve got for you is this – what should we do during our visit to the museum? That’s right I want you to organise the trip – you get to be the teacher and make the decision as to what we do on our trip!

But there are some things you’ll need to take into consideration. First of all you’ll need to visit the Science Museum website (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk) and have a look at what exhibitions, workshops and attractions they offer.

Next you’ll have to consider our budget and our available time. The bad news is that we don’t have a budget, i.e. we have no money available for this trip so you can’t choose any of the attractions that cost money. The good news is that the vast majority of attractions are free, so there’s still plenty of things to select from.

The final consideration is perhaps the most important, you’ve got to link what we visit with what we’re learning about in school. You can link our activities to what we’ve been learning about this half term or you can link our activities to what we will be learning about next half term (the main topics are: investigative maths; climate change; space; planet earth; and architectural design).

Be creative and be adventurous in your thinking. I’ll provide an idea of how your proposal should look in the comments section and then it’s over to you – what should we do on our trip?

We’ll arrive by about 10am and we’ll have lunch around 12pm. After spending half a hour on lunch we’ll have another session and then depart at 2pm. So we will have 2 hours learning time before lunch and 1 and a half hours of learning time after lunch.

10am-10:30am – Measuring Time Exhibition – I’ve selected this exhibition as all of our school is focusing on improving our numeracy levels and this exhibition will help us understand more about telling the time which is a numeracy topic.
10:30-11:00am – Energy: Fuelling The Future Interactive Gallery – This links to our climate change topic and learning about energy is important in learning about climate change.
11:00am-11:30am – Spaced Out Tour – This links to our space and planet earth topics and after looking at an exhibition and interactive gallery for the previous hour it would be nice to experience a tour as well.
11:30am-12:00pm – Launchpad Interactive Gallery – This is another space themed gallery but it’s a little bit more hands on and I think we’ll need something interactive just before lunch!
    12:00pm-12:30pm – Lunch
12:30pm-2:00pm – Atmosphere Exhibition – This is going to be the main focus for the day so it gets the most time given to it. We will have longer to explore the exhibition in full and make some extra notes that can really help our work in class.

We could take the iPads and record the most interesting information so we can show everyone back in school.

This is how a proposal should look, have a look at the museum’s website and see if you can create your own proposal.

Well first I just want to say that it’s really exciting that we get to chose what we do on our trip. I would really like to go on the spaced out tour because I find the Apollo very interesting.

I would like to learn about the stars, the planets, the cosmos, and orbit. I think that it will be a really interesting opportunity, as it will allow us to focus on the position of planets, distances of planets, and moons. It will make us think more about our universe, and what it really means to understand science.

Can you make an itinerary? You’ll need to include times for the different activities. Have a look at my example for how it should be done. We need to write a bit more to make it a proper proposal.

I think we should go on then space part for about 1 hour and 45 mins then for the next 15 mins go on the launch pad then have lunch for about 20 mins.
Then after lunch we should look at the Energy: fuelling the future for 45 mins then for the rest of the time look at anything people want to look at like maths and space again.

I would really like to go down to the lab where you can go and get a lab tag and put everything on your Lab tag and take it home and see everything you did at home and do it again on the computer. Here is my proposal.
10am- 11am = Exploring climate science, Atmosphere Gallery . This will help our work on climate and the environment, and there are five quick fun games to play! Lots to do here so we get a whole hour
11am-11.30am= Is Global Warming Really Our Fault, Antenna Gallery. We can explore the cause of global warming through a new report style and find out if it really is because of how humans use the earth. And this will link in with us reading An Inconvenient Truth.
11.30am-12pm= Spaced out tour. This will help us with our work on planet earth, and will be fun to have a walk around
    12pm-12.30pm LUNCH
12:30pm-1pm=Stronger by design. Going down to the Launch pad and participating in this 20 minute activity would be a great idea. It is all to do with designing and architecture.
1pm-1:30pm= Tipping Point. Build a tower and when you’re finished lean it to the side. See how far you can lean it before it topples over! This activity is also in the Launch pad.
1:30pm-2:00pm= FREE TIME!!!!  In the Lab. Free time, What’s not to like?! Everyone can get a Lab Tag, which they can insert into different games and do some activities. They can take these Lab Tags with them when they leave and log on to the Science Museums website, at home or at school and do more games and activities on line.

10am-10:30am – Challenge Of Materials – A very interesting, gallery. We could bring the iPads and use ‘Notes’ to write down Level 5describing words (Literacy + Extended Writing)

10:30-11:00am – In Future – This is a great PSHE activity as it encourages children to say their opinions about what they think life should be like in the future.

11:00am-11:30am – Antenna – Class 5 should start a news blog soon so if we found out the latest Science news then we could add it on. It is also a bright, colourful environment with LOTS of screen (According to a recent survey of children, a lot of them like screens like TVs and other devices.) .

11:30am-12:00pm – Atmosphere – This links to climate change and is a fun, fast game which I’m pretty sure Class 5 will LOVE! It has a colourful room which will capture pupils attention and make them seem much more interested.

    12:00pm-12:30pm – Lunch

12:30pm- 1:00pm – Energy: Fuelling the Future – This is by far the best exhibition. I have been many times and have enjoyed it hugely! Who knew that the ‘Do not touch’ sign meant ‘Do touch’! It’s got mini games full of fun and warnings. This also relates to climate change as some of the games are about it.

1:00pm- 1:50pm – Listening Post – This is a great activity because it shows the dangers of internet safety and how to use it. It has funny internet conversations and will make children learn more about the internet. Recently I chatted to Jo about internet safety and she said I should tell the class so this is a good way of talking about it and teaching people about it all.

1:50pm- 2:00pm – Get bags, coats etc. Get ready to leave.

Class 5 are having a trip to the Science Museum and here are some of the things that we might do there:

We will probably arrive at 10am and we will probably have lunch at about 12pm. Later, when we finish our lunch we will have a session and then start leaving at 2pm. We will have around 2 hours learning time before lunch and 1 and a half hours of learning time after lunch.

10am-10:30am – Cosmos & Culture – Measuring time is a good idea, but measuring time in cosmic proportions will be fabulous. Let’s improve our numeracy skills and stretch them into space. It is for older children, but it is a challenge.

10:30-11:00am – At this time I thought that we could go to the Measuring Time Exhibition because then it also helps us with our maths as well.

11:00am-11:30am -Now, we could go to the Spaced Out Tour.

11:30am-12:00pm – Launchpad Interactive Gallery – Mr Antcliffe seems really keen on this one, we should probably go there.

    12:00pm-12:30pm – Lunch!

12:30pm-2:00pm – Atmosphere Exhibition – We could now have a longer time to explore the exhibition in full and make some extra notes that can really help our work in class.

This is my schedule for the science museum:

First, we will arrive at the science museum for 10:00
then we will start at looking at the Launchpad until 11:00.Then we will be at the meeting point where we would be talking about our next task which would be taking pictures on whatever that you think is using maths and science in the same invention (e.g.) if there was a rocket that used maths to power it. We would be talking about this until 11:30 then at 11:30 we will start to do the activity. After that, at 12:00 we will have lunch until 12:30 when we will start looking at the different types of transport used in the olden days. at 1:30, we will go back to the meeting point where we will be sharing our pictures and talking about what we saw in the different rooms. At 2:00, we will start to head back to school.
