Class 5 to lead the Post-Resurrection service at the Cathedral

The exciting news is that Class 5 have the privilege of leading the next service at the cathedral. The class will be leading a service themed on the resurrection of Jesus (the resurrection is when Jesus returned to life after the crucifixion).

The service will reflect on some of the post-resurrection stories from the Bible. If you would like to have a role in the service then you will need to be familiar with the stories listed below. Click on the links to read the stories, then reflect on what they mean to Christians and what we can learn from the stories. The script for the service is here Cathedral Service Year 5 Su1 2015 – post resurrection service.

1) Jesus and Mary in the garden – Jesus calling Mary by her name, and knowing us by name – click here for more information.

2) Jesus and the two on the Road to Emmaus – making himself known to people who were sad and confused (and to us when we feel the same) – click here for more information.

3) Jesus and the fishermen – giving them (and us) confidence to go into the deeper water – click here for more information.

4) Jesus and Thomas – helping people (like us) with questions to believe – click here for more information.

Also we will be saying some prayers during the service. Think about the following theme and then write a prayer that could be read in the cathedral. Our theme – asking Jesus to make himself known to us and to be with us (and others who are sad, lost, frightened, or who do not or cannot believe) in all we do.

Leave a message in the comments section below and discuss your opinions on the forthcoming service.

The Story of Jesus and The Fishermen:

Peter and Andrew were sat mending their nets when a huge crowd gathered around Jesus. Jesus was very crowded and unable to move but he worked his way out and jumped on Peter and Andrew’s boat.
“Will you take your boat out onto sea for me?” He asked. “Then everyone can see me!” Peter and Andrew really wanted to finish their nets but took him out. Jesus spoke in a loud booming voice to the watchers by the edge of the sea. When he was finished he turned to Peter and Andrew.
“Go deeper into the sea and throw out your nets for a catch.”
“But you don’t understand! We’ve been fishing all day and we haven’t caught any fish!” But once again they obeyed his command. When they hauled up their nets it was full of the most delicious fishes!
“James! John! Come and help us!” They shouted. James and John came willingly. They had a great feast that night.

I like that story because it is quite easy to explain and quite clever. I can understand why Jesus did that. He did it to gain their trust can build his ever growing community of loyal Christians. His plan worked because they became his faithful disciples. They have helped spread the word of God (and Jesus) and now there are Christians all over the world!

Jordan’s Prayer (for the post resurrection service)

    O Father in Heaven,
Lord as we say this prayer, help us understand the true meaning of the Easter story. Those who don’t believe in the Easter story, Lord please show them your light, make them realise how important it is to have you. Lord as new days come, please manifest your power to those who do not believe as you are the one we look up to. Father, all the people who suffer in any way, please heal them.

If we ourselves struggle, Lord please lift us up by your mighty power. Let the message of the stories come through to us.
In the name of Jesus we say this prayer,
    Amen.

This is a really thoughtful prayer Jordan, all the hard work you put into religious studies is really paying off – well done.
