World Cup 2014

As well as being a festival of football (do you like the alliteration there!), the World Cup in Brazil this year gives us an opportunity to extend our thinking in different areas. Below are two creative thinking challenges, one is based on mathematics and the other is based on international affairs and politics.

Challenge Number 1

Can you suggest a reason why there have been mass protests and demonstrations by the people of Brazil against the World Cup being hosted in their country. Most people across the world see the World Cup as a celebration and as lots of fun, but a large number of people in Brazil have the opposite view – why do you think this is? Write your answer in the comments section below.

Challenge Number 2

What is the lowest number of points a team can gain and still qualify from the group stages into the knockout stages? Is it possible to qualify without winning a game?

Once you’ve solved that problem think about this one, what is the highest number of points a team can gain and still not qualify from the group stages into the knockout stages?

Don’t forget to explain your answer in full and write it in the comments section below.

The Correct Technique for Sprinting

In our recent P.E. lesson we learnt the correct technique for sprinting efficiently.

We learnt that it’s important to keep a 90* bend in your arms and to drive them forwards across your chest.

We also learnt that it’s important to tuck your chin down but keep your eyes looking upwards towards the horizon.

Next, we learnt that it’s important to drive your knees upwards, and to try and close the gap by raising your heels towards your glute muscles.

The final thing we learnt was that it’s important to lean forward and make the movement as dynamic as possible.

We applied these techniques to a relay race situation and practiced positioning our hands on the relay baton, as well as thinking about how best to transfer the baton to a partner.

What do you know about sprinting, and what are your recollections of the lesson?

Class 5 wow the audience at the Royal Festival Hall

Friday 6th June saw Class 5 visit the Royal Festival Hall to perform in Southwark Music Service’s concert. It was an unbelievable day from the perfect weather, to the inspirational walk to the venue along the South Bank to, most importantly of all, the awe inspiring performance by Class 5.

Many thanks to Sandra and Pauline for helping to organise the performance and many thanks must go to Class 5 for it was their fantastic behaviour and musical talent that meant they got chosen to be the class to perform the African drumming routines. Truly inspirational all round.

Please leave a comment below with your thoughts and reflections on the event.
