Class 5’s Book Group

Hi,

If you’re as passionate about books as I am then you’ll love the opportunity to write a book review so that you can recommend great books for other people to read. On this blog entry you can write a review of a book that you’ve read recently.

In your book review try to include:

what you enjoyed about the book;

a quick summary (but don’t tell everyone exactly what happens – we don’t want to ruin any surprises that might be at the end of the book!);

why someone else should read it; and

a mark out of 10 so that people can get a good idea about how much you liked the book.

HAPPY READING EVERYONE

I have read Little Red Riding Hood, it is a very good book I would recommend this book to children aged 3-8.
It is about a wolf that follows a little girl called Little Red Riding Hood. The girl goes to her grandma’s house to find the Wolf.

I have read White Fang (stage 14), it is a great book. What I liked about the book is that there were lots of chapters to it and it is adventurous. Here is my summary; there is a wolf cub and it acts like a wolf and dog. At first I was confused but then I understood it all. It’s better that you should read it because it is a great book to read so I am going to give it a 10 out of 10.

I have read a book called the Lightning Thief, it is an extreme adventure book and has a bit of a twist in it. I would recommend this book to children aged 9-13 and I rate out of 10 probably a 9, you should really read it (also available on DVD).

I have just read the Hobbit. I mostly recommend this book to 10-12 year olds. I rate this book 10/10, let’s see if another book can beat this one! This is also a film trilogy, the third movie is coming out this December – I can’t wait to watch it, well that is if I watch it (let’s hope I watch it).

I have just read Raiders of the Seas as well. It is about when a boy called Nicholas Bloom A.K.A Nick who was fighting along Edward Teach A.K.A Blackbeard for five years but finally Blackbeard betrayed him.

I have read a book called Little Manfred by Michael Morpurgo. It was really interesting but I would recommend it for kids aged 7-14. It is about a little wooden toy named Little Manfred, but one day the 2 kids that owned him came across two men who were from Germany who was in the war and went to England to work there and stayed in a farm with a little girl called Grace who turns out to be the 2 little kids mum! The 2 kids were 11 and 7, there names were Charly and Alex. Alex loves football and so does his dad. They watched the World Cup Final match on TV in 1966. The two men that they came across bought tickets to go to the match aswell!

    ‘Ink Heart’

Meggie is a young girl with a big secret her father is able to read and make character come alive and when he read out some bad people called Capricorn, Basta and Dustfinger. These characters bring bad luck to Meg and her dad, Mortimer. For example, his wife gets taken into the book as something had to go back. So they pack their bags and set out to Aunt Eleanor to help put them back.

It is a thrilling book which has sequels if you love the first one. It is good for people 9+ as it has some difficult words .

I have read a book called Spiderwick, I would recommend this book to 10-13 year olds because there are many hard words that young children would not understand. I would rate this book 8/10 because even for me some words were quite hard to understand, but overall the book was fun, action packed and really exiting!

I have also read a book called Aliens at Paradise High (stage 15), I would recommend this book to 9-10 year olds because it is a long book and quite all over the place so I think that that is the appropriate age, even though the book is about aliens people would still enjoy it. I would rate this book 10/10 because everyone would love it and everyone would enjoy reading it.

There are 10 books in the series. They are all about the main character who is Greg Heffley. The book is a best seller and is now a movie. 8 of them are diaries and the other 2 are a movie diary and a do it yourself book.

    ‘Why the whales came’
This book is by Michael Morpurgo and is a gripping fantasy tale set in April 1924 about the emotional friendship between an old deserted man and two lively young children.
Gracie (one of the main characters) I think that she is lively but needs someone to push her because once she has her mind on something there is no stopping her!

Who would you recommend this book to? Is it suitable for younger children? Would pupils who like non-fiction books enjoy this, or is it just for fans of fiction writing?

I have read a book called 12 Rounds 2 and it is about a man who is a police officer who went to work then he got a call and it was from someone unknown. He has 12 rounds to do his rounds but the only thing is, if he makes a mistake his family might get hurt. Will he make it? (At the end he plays against the unknown man who is the WWE Superstar Randy Orton).

I would recommend this book to 11-15 year olds, there’s a kids version and an adult version (also available in DVD).

I read a book called Beast Quest, it is about a boy called Tom who saves the land and frees the monsters because they are under marvel’s spell. When he frees them he gets something from them.

I think this is for children aged to 9-12 because younger people won’t understand it and it is set a long long time ago.

I read this book called My Friend Walter written by Michael Morpurgo.
I think it is one of the most interesting book I have ever read in my life it has all the things in it that all kid books should have in it  (e.g Happiness,Sadness,Fun things and Difficult moments for them). I would recommend this book to 5 or older because it might be a little bit scary for under 5 it has ghost in it.
From my point of view I would rate this 8/10 in stars it would have to be 5/5.

I have chosen a non-fiction book to write about and it is called An Inconvenient Truth. I would recommend this book to young adults because there are some tricky words to pronounce like precipitation and lots more.

I like this because it tells you information on how to save the earth. It also tells you about different types of hurricanes like Alpha, Harvey, Tammy and lots more. The author of this book is called Al Gore

I have read Jacky Daydream, it is about Jacqueline Wilson and her whole life.

It is written by Jacqueline Wilson herself. I would rate it 9/10 because some bits were not that exciting but the rest was wonderful. I would recommend this book for 9 to 10 year olds otherwise it would probably be a bit too challenging.

I like this book because it shows that sometimes in life things go down but you can always get back up again and turn over a new leaf so you forget about the bad things. This book is a non-fiction book so if you like non-fiction get up now and read it!

I have read a book called the Longest Whale Song by Jacqueline Wilson. In the book there is a little girl whose mum and dad got split up. When her mum meets a young man called Jack Ella does not like him. Soon Ella’s mum has a baby and needs to go to hospital very quick! Once her mum has had the baby [little Samson] she does not wake up! Do not worry she is not dead but in a coma, a very long coma. While mum is in hospital Ella gets a visit from a long lost family member.

I wound rate this 10 out of 10, and recommend it for people aged 9-12 years old. If you like it you can read some more of Jacqueline Wilson’s books like: Hetty feather; Little Darlings; and Tracy Beaker and her diary.

I have recently been reading a book called The Hobbit. I would recommend this book to 8-12 year olds. But I would not recommend this  book for kids younger than 8 because they will probably have a tough time with both the vocabulary (complex speech) and some of the themes in the book. So good luck everyone out there who has read this book review. Don’t forget that the film is completely scary!
    GOOD LUCK!

I have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I rate this book 8/10. I have watched the movie on DVD and I loved it – I rate it 10/10! It is about this boy named Harry who lives with his aunt, uncle and cousin. Unexpected letters kept coming from owls and they were all to Harry! So they had to move and then an weird guest came called Hagrid who made Harry go to another school – Hogwarts a school for wizards and witches – I’ll leave the rest of the book to you my young wizard…or witch.

My Friend Walter by Michael Morpurgo.
Bess was normal till she went to a family reunion in the Tower of London but when she went to Bloody Tower were Sir Walter Raleigh’s ghost was found and that’s where the trouble began. Soon she finds out that he is her ancestor! Then Bess comes up with an idea to bring Walter home with her. But living with a ghost is hard as he breaks plates and cup, steals a horse and smokes cigars in her room.

To top the trouble he steals a crown jewel which causes chaos for everybody as it happened while they move out. I guess you know who it is? Walter. But he promises that things will be better, but have things taken a turn for the worst or better? Whose to know?

I think that it is meant for children aged 8-12 because it is historical in places, but I think it is a really good book and it will help your reading vocabulary .

I have read a book by Michael Morpurgo called Little Manfred. It is about two little kids on the beach, one kid is 12 and the other is 7. The 7 year old and his dad liked football a lot and watched the World Cup Final in 1966. They live in a farm and saw two men on the beach and the two men went over to them and chatted to the two kids named Charley and Alex. The two men also chatted about how they bought tickets to the World Cup Final in 1966 and about if the final goal by England went over the line or not. In the end the two men were from Germany and worked in England and stayed at the same farm as the two kids. They also played with the two kids mum called Grace and make a little wooden toy called Little Manfred. One of the men who made Little Manfred was killed in the war. Later on they go back to the farm and Grace sees the two men and can’t believe it. She cooked them tea inside their house and talked about how the two men fought on the Bismark the German ship and how the fought in the war. I really liked the book and thought to myself how terrible it would be if the war was still on.

I have read a book called the Lion Adventure. The two boys, Hal and his little brother Roger, are on a daring quest to find, and take back to a zoo, a man eating lion and it’s pride. What’s more is that Hal is 15 and Roger is 13 and they are hunting a MAN EATING LION!!!!!!

Roger was hunting with Hal and a man eating lioness pounced on him. They had to shoot the lioness or Roger was gone forever, then Roger picked up the cub and is planning to raise him.

I read a book called Little Red Riding Hood. I recommend this for ages 3 to 6 and I think it is a good book. It is about a little girl who goes through the forest to visit her grandma but there is a wolf who follows the girl. I will give it a 3/10 from my opinion probably because it’s aged 3 to 6 but probably a 10/10 from a child aged 3 to 6.

    Dork Diaries Pop Star,

I read a book about a girl called Nikki Maxwell. She has started a new school, moved to a new house, and is writing a new diary. She survived the mean girl Mackenzie, but luckily she has her BFF’s Chloe and Zoey to help her. When she tried to enter the talent school to get a full scholarship she got a bill for 10,000,000 dollars to stay in WCH (West Country High school). But in the talent show you can also win one of the scholarships. But will her friends beat Mackenzie and girls?

I would rate this book 10/10 and would recommend it for people that like, drama and diary writing (which is what we have been doing in class)! But I would say that it would be good for 9-18 year olds because they are turning in to teenagers and young adults so they might be like it.

Wow this book is so interesting and dramatic, well at least I think so! But some people maybe will think that it was just for girls but it is for everyone!

Sleepover is a book written by Jaqueline Wilson is about a group of girls called the Alphabet Girls as all of their names start with either the letters:a, b, c, d and e. One of the girls named Daisy has a sister who is older than her, however, she can not walk speak or do anything. So when Daisy is invited to all of the girls houses for a sleepover, she was overjoyed. But when they ask to go to her house, she gets worried as they might make fun of her

A lovely girl called Emily, who is part of the Aplhabet Girls Group, has a best friend, Chloe, who is really mean to Daisy. When Chloe invited Daisy to her sleepover, it was only to make fun of her. She even put anchovies all over Daisy’s homemade pizza and Daisy hates anchovies! (What a girl!)

In the end, Emily un friended Chloe and became Daisy best friend! Chole even joined another group of friends to play with as she was so annoyed with Emily for becoming Daisy’s best friend.

I recommend this book to girls (and boys if you want) to enjoy this book and to remember that friends do change, from time to time. This book can be for everyone!

The man who wrote this is my favourite author: Arthur Conan Doyle! I rate this book so far 10/10 because it is so adventurous. I recommend this book for ages 9 and over.

    Matilda
Matilda is a child who is underestimated by her parents and her brother. It is not until Matilda attends school and meets the lovely Miss Honey that anyone begins to nurture her talent. But things don’t become easier for Matilda there. She must survive a place ruled by the frightening and larger-than-life Miss Trunchbull who has Matilda in her sights, insisting she is “a nasty little worm” because of her cheek and her father’s dodgy car selling business. However she discovers that she has telekinesis where she can move objects and she uses that to save the day with  Miss Honey.

I think this is a book for 8-12 because it is age appropriate and it will have you in giggles till you fall. It is a very heart warming  book that really is love-able for all.

I have read a book called the BFG that stands for the Big Friendly Giant. I think this fantastic book by Roald Dahl is for people 8-12. This book is about a giant and a human called Sophie. This giant is not the giant you might think as he is a nice and funny giant. He does not eat humans and he’s not like a shark that only bit people when they are bleeding – they don’t do that. Sophie is just a normal girl who wears round glasses like Harry Potter. She meets the giant at the witching hour, at first she is afraid and then she overcomes her fear. I love this book, so far I have not read it all yet but I will soon. I am reading this book for my homework. I love this homework and this book at the same time!

I have just been reading a book called Beware the Vikings. The story is set on the ocean as well as an island and a village. A couple of the characters are called Thorfinn, Snorri, Egil, Helgi, Bjarni, Ari and Grim. The Vikings get attacked by skraelings on a new island that they find on a journey around the coast. I would recommend this book to around year 4 and year 5 students. After you have read this book, why don’t you recommend it to a friend of yours because it is a very action packed book.

This historical account explores the lives of some of the most famous swashbuckling pirates of all time and takes a look at those still at large…
