Persuasive Letter Writing – Extend Writing Session Sp1 Wk4

During our Extended Writing session in Sp1 Wk4 we will be writing a persuasive letter to follow on from our work on biography writing. We will be basing our writing on Charles Darwin again. You can remind yourself of Charles Darwin’s life story using the links at the bottom of the page.

Our persuasive letter will be addressed to David Cameron and it will be attempting to persuade him to create a new national holiday – Charles Darwin Day. When the country can celebrate his achievements as a scientist.

Your persuasive letter will need three paragraphs:

Paragraph 1 – you will introduce the subject and state your opinion (that we should have a new national holiday called Charles Darwin Day).

Paragraph 2 – you will give facts about his achievements as a scientist and you will use emotive language and a rhetorical question.

Paragraph 3 – you will restate what you want to happen and you will use flattery.

Charles Darwin’s biography:

1) His early life;

2) His voyage on the Beagle; and

3) His work on evolution.

    Charles Darwin was born in 1809 on the 12th of February, he was brought up in a wealthy home. He was born at The Mount, his dad (Robert Darwin) worked as a doctor. Robert Darwin was the fifth of six children, the other children were called Marianne, Caroline, Susan, Erasmus, Charles and Catherine. Darwin did not like school or do well in it at all, he did take an interest in nature and started collecting it and shooting it. When Charles was a teenager he got very interested in shooting, and he would go shooting with Uncle Jos. When he was 18 he was not just interested in animals he was also interested in a girl, they went shooting together, for walks and all other kinds of stuff. He even thought about marrying her. When Darwin was on the other side of the world, he got letters saying that she had got married.
