R.E. – Communication in the Old Testament

In our R.E. sessions this half-term, we will be studying examples of communication within the Christian faith. To start with, we will be looking at communication in the Old Testament, therefore it is important that we all know the following five stories:

Story 1 – God communicating with Jacob in a dream;

Story 2 – God communicating with Moses through the burning bush;

Story 3 – God communicating with Jonah in the fish;

Story 4 – God communicating with Daniel in the den;

Story 5 – God communicating with Elijah in the brook.

Whilst you are reading these stories, think about the method God has chosen to communicate with people on Earth and how the different people in these stories would be thinking and feeling.

    From reading the first one, I have learnt to forgive your siblings even if they have done something really bad, or have hurt you. Always communicate with them even when you are going through good and bad times, one more thing don’t run away from you problems! I have also learnt that Jacob had a brother and his brother was planning to kill him, and that their dad was partially blind. One other thing I learnt was that Jacob’s mum was on Jacob’s side, and wanted to get him back.

    What I have learnt from the second one is that Moses had killed an Egyptian so he sent his soldiers to get him, so he ran in the desert. Then I learnt that he met a wise man and married one of his daughters, one more thing I had learnt was that that god led him and helped him.

    The burning bush is familiar to me. From reading the third one, I have learnt that it wasn’t a whale that took Jonah it was a big fish. I had also learnt not to run away like Jonah did.

    I have learnt from the fourth one that what ever happens you should never not believe in your faith. Don’t be afraid of who you are and don’t be ashamed of your religion. I had also learnt that Daniel got put in the lions den, and an angel appeared and shut their mouth so they didn’t hurt Daniel.

    In the last one I learnt that god told Elijah to tell the king that there will be no water for three years!

    The most important thing I learnt through the stories was to be obedient when God calls you and to have faith in God and yourself if you want to succeed.

    When I wonder about bible stories, I feel like God is talking to me. I learnt that you should always obey because something bad could happen to you, so I now obey a lot.

    I learnt that God will always be by your side. My favourite was Daniel and the Lion because with God by your side anything is possible.

    What I learnt is that if God wants you to do something he will show you it and he tries to persuade you to spread the word of himself and Jesus Christ.

    I have learnt that, whatever happens, you should never not believe in your faith. Don’t be afraid of who you are and don’t be ashamed of your religion. You have a right to follow it – embrace it and don’t hide!

    I am not sure I believe these stories but I think they are rather like legends and make us remember the story. I had to think about these stories very hard and didn’t find them easy to read. Are they trying to show that even though God felt let down by some people he still loves all the world, even the baddies? That God will always forgive everyone? That he is trying to show them how to become better and live good lives? I think so.

    I have been talking to my mummy about the attacks in Paris and don’t understand why God would let these things happen. Maybe its time for a new message. I wonder if God has a twitter account?

    By reading the stories, I learnt that even if you make mistakes you should trust in God and to never doubt yourself. When God calls you’re to listen.

    I agree with Ned. Some of the stories are hard to read and it is hard to not want to see people who do bad things get punished. I guess it would be better for those people to realise that they have done wrong but that doesn’t help those who have been hurt by them. I have read all the stories and they all seem to be about listening to God.
    All the characters in the stories have either been spoken to by God or God has come to them in a dream. They all trust that what they have seen and heard is a direct message from God. The stories tell us that we should listen to what God has to say and that he would never tell us to harm another creature. He would prefer that we change are ways. In the story of Jonah and the Big Fish, Jonah was cross because he thought that the people of Ninevah were so bad that they deserved to be punished, but God didn’t want to punish them preferring them to stop being bad.
