Autumn 1 – Week 6

Year 5 stars of the week: Fatimah and Julia

Yesterday, Year 5 visited the Museum of Water and Steam and had a fantastic Victorian day out!

We began by looking around at the incredible machines in the museum which were built in the Victorian period, and were responsible for pumping clean drinking water into London. We then discussed how engineers developed steam trains as a result of these developments. Did you know, that if you look on the back of a £50 note, you will see a steam train?

After looking around the museum, we then visited the Splash Zone where we had to work together to make the water move from one area to another. This was a lot of fun!

Following this, we then learnt about how coal is made and enjoyed a ride on the locomotive.

We also learnt how Victorians washed, dried and ironed their clothes – it was a very lengthy process, involved lots of hard work and even animal fat… Eurgh!

Year 5 – please comment below and tell me what your favourite part of the trip was.

I really enjoyed the splash zone and locomotive. They were probably my favourites! The animal fat smelt disgusting and the work was very hard. The steam engines were huge!

*My favourite fact was about the guy who pooed in the well.
*The most interesting fact was that 10 percent of people don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet. Gross!

My favourite part of this trip was the splash zone because I got to pull and turn levers and I got to make the water go the way I wanted it to go

I liked it because we got to experience riding on a real steam train and see the biggest steam-water engine in England! It was fun learning about how they worked and their heights were amazing. And we also got to do a fun and interesting quiz.

When i went to the london water and steam museam my favourite part was the wash day. I enjoyed washing colthes like a victorian, But I still can’t believe they use animal fat as soap that’s really weird ! At the start I thought I was using a plunger but it was really called a dolly, how weird , I really enjoyed the trip and thank you to my teacher who paid the whole thing. I would love to go again!

*My favourite interesting fact was when sewage pipes were filled with horrible things such as nappies, paper etc.
*The most nastiest fact I found out was when 10% of people don’t was their hands after using the loo. Eww!

My favourite part was the splash zone because you could make damns and make the steam engine circulation BUT IN THE END EVERY ONE GOT TREMENDOUSLY WET. Then it was the locomotive, I found the whistle really loud.

    I learned: –
    * The people on the back of a £50 note are James Watt and Matthew Boulton.
    * A man pooed down a well and 43 people drank it and they all died of Typhoid.
    * Coal is made by old toppled trees squeezed by mud really tight and if you compress coal even more it will turn into diamond.

    My favourite part of the trip was the splash zone because I experimented with the water and we made a big fountain. I also enjoyed the steam train ride because I was able to see how a real Victorian steam train worked and what it was used for. I also liked the Victorian wash day because I saw how Victorians washed their clothes in the past and what resources they used. I have three facts of what I have learnt on the trip;
*Only 10% of people wash their hands after going to the toilet!
*The two men seen on the back of a £50 note are named James Watt and Matthew Boulton.
*And a man pooed in a well and 43 people drank it and they all died of typhoid!

I liked the steam train and the splash zone because on the steam train you can hear how the engine works and on the splash zone you can make the water go different directions.

I really enjoyed when we went on the steam locomotive because it takes me back to the olden days and I felt like I was travelling on the first ever train built in Britain. When we played in the splash zone water cycle I found that if all of class 5 use their muscles and strength the water fountain can reach up to two metres!

The London Museum Of Steam And Water was a very fun trip and I also enjoyed looking at all of the steam machines because the musky, metally smell also reminded me of many, many years ago.

high and the steam train and when we got to the end off the track the facts were really interesting and i never new that they carry animals on a steam train in the Victorians and the work sheet was really fun because i learnt new things on the bottom floor there was a tunnel
with a fake or dead rat in the tunnel
