Spring 1 – Week 4

This week, Year 5 have been working hard to calculate the area and perimeter of rectangles and squares.

It requires fluency within addition, subtraction and multiplication! Well done to all of the children in Year 5 for showing resilience and determination to understand new concepts.

Challenge: Can you work out the perimeter and area of the shape below?

    I think the answer is 38cm. I started at 8cm and +11cm+5cm+5cm+3cm+6cm=38cm

    The perimeter of the shape is 38cm as the number sentence is 8+11+5+5+3+x. The x is 6cm as 11-5=6. Therefore, 8+11+5+5+3+6=38.

    I love calculating area! It is very useful for future references. I know that if I have an irregular shape than I need to find the area step-by-step.

    the perimeter of the shape= 8+11+5+5+3+6 (which equals 38cm)
    perimeter= 38cm
    the area of the shape= 8 x 6 (which equals 48cm) + 5 x 5 (which equals 25cm)
    area= 73cm squared. (:

    P=35
    Area part a (upper part)=24cm
    Area part b (lower part)=25cm
    I hope it’s right!
    (P is perimeter)

    I think the perimeter is 31cm and the area is 81cm (I’m not quite sure though!)
    This lesson was fun to do and really challenged me on adding big numbers mentally. Thanks Miss Henderson for teaching us this!

    5 + 5 + 11 + 8 + 6 + 3 = 38

    11 – 5 = 6

    5 + 5 = 10
    10 + 11 = 21
    21 + 8 = 29
    29 + 6 = 35
    35 + 3 = 38
