Summer 2 – Week 1

Year 5 stars of the week: Teddy and Julia

Last half term, Year 5 visited the Imperial War Museum where we had a great time meeting Bernard and Ron.

Bernard was born in Dulwich and was evacuated during the Blitz when he was 12 years old. It was fascinating listening to his stories and experiences of what life was like for him during the war.

Ron joined HMS Belfast and sailed all the way to Korea to fight in the Korean War. Ron worked as a wireless operator and was very helpful in explaining how Morse code works. He still remembers it now and sometimes even translates adverts into Morse code!

Year 5, comment in the space below and explain what your favourite part of the trip was.

My favorioute part of the trip was meeting both Ron and Bernard and learning about what their experiences were during WW2. It was very interesting to listen to Ron as he described what happened in the HMS Belfast when he was fighting, I remember him saying that when the bombs when off in the night and the bullets we being fired he would be lifted out of his hammock by the sound and the HMS Belfast moving. It was so interesting to listen to Bernard as he told us about how he was evacuated and his mum and younger brother died sadly, he told us a story about him and his dad in his Anderson shelter and he looked out of his window in there and he saw a bomb then his dad said ‘GET DOWN’ so he did and then the glass in the window smashed open and the glass went in his face and his bottom, when the nurse came to have a look at him she didn’t pull the glass out of his face but out of his BUM! ???? Everyone in class 5 found this very funny. I think Bernard and Ron are very breve people!

One thing I leant whilst we were taking with Ron what that He had to be squashed in the hammock everyday with other people I also learnt was that he has to learn Morse code and I also think Ron still remembers it!! One thing I learnt from Bernard was that he was born in Dulwich and was evacuated during the Blitz when he was 12 years old!! can you believe that, having to be separated form your family to live with other people you don’t even know. I also learnt that Trousers were rationed during the war and if fact Bernard is still wearing trousers TODAY!! I wish we could stay longer but we couldn’t šŸ™ it was a great time I have ever experienced and I would love to meat them again!! THANK YOU MISS HENDERSON FOR TAKING US TO THIS LOVELY TTIP I MOST CERTANLEY ENJOYED MYSELF!!!!

My favorite part of the trip was when we split up in groups (I was in Sam’s group), we explored the place and enjoyed fascinating and educative sites and loved the spectacular trip. Before hand we had and amazing run around and a class only Q & A with Rob and Bernard. They taught us the good and not so great memories and the tough scenario and how they overcame it with Knowledge strength and understanding.
    A trip to remember !

My favourite part of the trip was when we met Ron and Bernard and learnt a little bit more about both their lives during the war. It was really interesting to to find a little bit about how our lives could have if we were to be in the 2nd World War. I was shocked at how both of them went through so much and have managed to be alive to this day and i hope they are having an enjoyable life . Also after meeting Ron and Bernard i also enjoyed looking at the Spitfire ,the doodle bugs ,the rocket and many other WW2 planes.I really enjoyed looking at the model of a WW2 house and how a Anderson shelter really looked like.

My favorite part of the trip was when we learned about Bernard and Ron life during the war. I thought it was really funny when Bernard told us the story about when shards of glass got into his body. This is what he said I was looking out the window and something was coming towards the ground when it hit the ground all the glass broke that was near and all these shards of glass came into my body, he said to his dad to look at this and his dad shouted get down from there but it was too late all these pieces of glass came into me . Soon a women came round to everybody’s houses and checked that they are ok. And when she came round to our house I asked her if I should take these pieces of glass out but she said no, no don’t do that you will have blisters for the rest of your life but we should get the ones out of your bottom though. So I did what I was told and bent over and she picked out the shards of glass from my bottom and still today I have these blisters. My favourite story from Ron was when he was in HMS Belfast and you where triying to fall asllep but when the cannons blew (because his hammock was underneth the cannons) he flew out of his hammock and got the shock of his live. This is what he said when I do a job during the night you have to try and get to sleep during the day. You would have bad luck if the cannons blew and you were underneath the cannons the shock of the cannons and the blast would shake the bout and then you would fly out of your hammock and nearly bash your head on the roof.

I loved going to the Imperial War Museum. It was so interesting. I canā€™t believe the V2s were so fast people couldnā€™t see or hear them! Bernard and Ron had so many engaging stories. I listened in very contentedly. Poor Bernard got glass stuck in his face! It was a surprise for me when Ron said he couldnā€™t bury his Chinese shipmate. Listening to morse code must have been so complicated!

I loved talking to Ron and Bernard! I learnt so much. I can’t believe people got glass shards from explosions in their face! Poor Bernard. The V2s were the scariest bombs, that’s for sure.

I learnt from Bernard that when he was re-evacuated from the coast as the government thought the Germans would attack via the coast, he was moved to Woking where his mother was staying in her big house. Bernard got to see her mum once but unfortunately she died.

I learnt from Ron that even though he did not fight in the Second World War, he was still a member of all the many crewmates he had on board the HMS Belfast which, after World War II, set sail to Korea to fight in the Korean war. He was a child during World War II but because he lived in the safe countryside, it was pointless to get evacuated, so he wasn’t evacuated.

I really enjoyed when Bernard was talking about when a bomb hit his house and how all the glass got stuck on his bum and his head. All though it must of hurt, it was also very funny. I also enjoyed when Ron was talking about how he had to write in Morse code when people we sending him information when they was in a battle. I found out that you could see the doodlebugs in the air and the England army used to have a tally on their planes of how much time they shoot a German down while they were on a plane.

I learnt that as well as food, clothes were rationed too. So it was more common to wear shorts. I also learnt that they would tally up how much plains they shot down on the wing or side of the aeroplane. I also found out that Ron had to use Morse code and he can still remember it!

I was lucky enough to attend this trip a couple of years ago so was thrilled when I was asked to go again! Both times I’ve said after that they have been my favourite trips. Fascinating to speak to people that have lived through the things that we learn in our history lessons
