Autumn 2 – Week 5

Stars of the Week: Juno and Joshua

This week, Class 5 have continued their DT topic of food from over the world. We looked at the ingredients that are used to make guacamole, which is a South American dip. We searched where the ingredients originated from and plotted them on a map of the world.

In English,  we looked at the passive voice. Class 5 were able to confidently change a sentence from the active voice to the passive voice. An example that we came up with was ‘The boy ate the doughnut’ which we changed to ‘The doughnut was eaten by the boy’.

Autumn 2 – Week 4

Stars of the Week: Diane and Joshua

In P.E, Class 5 have been working very hard to improve their basketball skills. This week, they focused on keeping possession of the ball. There were a few different strategies they used, from crossing over with the ball, to passing the ball to another member of their team. They played a game of life-size ‘table basketball’ where the defenders couldn’t move and the attackers had to take the ball to the other side through their opponents.

Well done for your hard work in assessments this week, Class 5.

Autumn 2 – Week 3

Stars of the Week: Victor and Anashe

This week, Class 5 have focused very well on report writing. They started the week by looking  at a newspaper report and labelling all of the language features. Once they understood the features, they planned their own reports about global warming based on pictures of glaciers melting from An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore. Afterwards, they wrote their reports out which they will be editing and publishing next week.

In Maths, Class 5 finished their topic of multiplication and division and started a new topic on perimeter. They recalled that perimeter is the total length of all sides of a shape and looked at different ways to measure this.

Autumn 2 – Week 2

Stars of the Week: India and Maximillion

This week, Class 5 have continued their topic of forces in science. They looked at how surface area can affect air resistance by using different sized parachutes. The class predicted that the greater the surface area of the parachute, the more air resistance would be occurring on the parachute. They expected to see the bigger parachute drop slower and they were absolutely right!

In English, Class 5 spent some time looking at In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. They then performed the poem to the class in groups and wrote their own Remembrance Day poems.

Autumn 2 – Week 1

Stars of the Week: Beatrice and Daniel

This week, Class 5 started their computing topic on vector drawing. They used Google Drawing to make pictures of houses with very simple shapes. They look forward to making more complicated drawings in future lessons.

In PE, they started their topic of fitness and basketball. Class 5 focused on getting their heart rates up with jumping jacks and jogging around. This warmed them up for their lesson on dribbling with a basketball. Well done class 5 for great focus this lesson!

Autumn 1 – Week 7

Stars of the Week: Henry and Isabella

This week, Class 5 have tried a few different challenges in maths. They looked at many different strategies to find answers including trial and error. Some children were able to think about easier ways to find an answer and made it so they could easily answer any new question with ease.

They have also been learning about time zones in science. As the earth rotates, different sides have day time which means that everyone is not in the exact same time zone as us. Class 5 predicted who would be 6 hours before us and who would be after us in the world. Then, they checked their predictions with a time zone chart.

Class 5 have done a superb job practicing for their auditions for our Christmas performance and Mr Crowley was very impressed with everyone’s dedication. Well done Class 5!

Autumn 1 – Week 6

Stars of the Week: Mariama and Mazin

This week, Class 5 completed the mini marathon. They made sure they jogged as efficiently as possible to run the furthest distance they could. Some children pushed themselves further and did many more laps than they needed to complete the distance! Great work, Class 5!

Next week, Class 5 will include everything they have learned in their information texts about Georgia O’Keeffe.

Autumn 1 – Week 5

Stars of the Week: Luca and Helena

This week, Class 5 have been powering through to complete the mini marathon. They started last week and have pushed themselves this week to cover more of the distance. They learned the importance of jogging as opposed to sprinting around so that they could continue running for longer. We will complete this next week.

In maths, Class 5 have focused on single-step and multi-step addition and subtraction problems. They looked at the language that is used in worded questions and decided what operation they would need to do if certain words came up.

Autumn 1 – Week 4

Stars of the Week: Stanley and Olivia

In computing this week, Class 5 have been learning about how messages are sent from one computer to another. All computers have their own IP addresses. They modelled how to send messages in ‘packets’ from one side of the classroom to the other. It was easy for one person to send one message, but when there were messages going both ways, the sending slowed right down!

Class 5 have planned the next chapter to their class text The Corn Grows Ripe and they look forward to writing the chapters out in full.
