Beaconsfield Gallery

We had a wonderful trip to Beaconsfield Gallery, near Lambeth Bridge, on Tuesday.

It’s a bit hard to explain…but we participated in an art project, where a live video link was set up to children of our own ages in Berlin. There they sat/stood/danced in a room identical to the one that we ourselves sat/stood/danced in, and we even had a microphone to speak with them (we communicated in English). Our images were then superimposed on top of each other (or ‘dissolved’) to create a ‘new person’. We did a similar thing with tracing paper and self-portraits in another part of the gallery.

We have a lot of pictures below, which might make the experience clearer, but if you still don’t entirely understand, then ask one of Class 6 when you see them around the school.

We met some children just like us in Germany and explored the possibilities of digital technology to bring people together across the continent – thank you Beaconsfield Gallery!

What did you enjoy most at the gallery?

Did the art make you think about technology or Germany differently?

I really enjoyed when we were talking to children in Berlin, we were trying to merge our face into theirs and see what we looked like, it was also fun when we drew a portrait of the person opposite us then merged the 2 drawing, while we could see what the other group was doing by looking at the tv, it was real fun going to Beaconsfield !

I loved how we could ‘dissolve’ into children in Germany! The funniest part of the trip was when someone from our class asked a German boy how he was and he replied, ‘I am hungry’. It was interesting to see what children from other countries wear and what their language sounds like; after dancing, talking and balancing oranges on our heads, we got to sing our sing-up song to all the staff who helped us. Thank you everyone who helped with the trip, it was a wonderful experience.

Going to Beaconsfield Gallery was very fun; we got to see people in Berlin on a screen and we had to try and overlap our bodies to make one person. It was extremely fun. However we didn’t all go at once, half the class went first whilst the other half were drawing pictures of their classmates. Afterwards, the other half went whilst the half that went first did the drawings. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST TRIPS EVER.

I really enjoyed going to Beaconsfield Gallery, the atmosphere and experience was incredible. I liked when we drew the pictures of each other on tracing paper and merged them together. It was funny, I drew my friend and she drew me; it was funny to me- and to her as well!  The best bit was when we went upstairs to talk to some children IN GERMANY! It was a bit difficult to communicate to them since they were on screen. There were two seats and we had to sit on them, and the children in Germany had the same. We sat on a chair and so did they, it basically looked like you were sitting on each other. It was really fun because we wre socialising and interacting with other children in a different country. It was a great experience!

I thought it would be a simple camera and you would talk through a microphone to the children in Berlin, although it WAS a simple camera and you WOULD talk through a microphone, you would look at a screen and you could dissolve into the other person. If you have ever wanted to be able to walk through a door this was your chance! There was a door at the far corner, which, if you opened it and the kid in Berlin did, you would make the door go through the other person and other door. It was SUPER FUN! If you ever get the chance to go!

I liked seeing the German children because they were different to the children that we see all the time.
