Poetry

To begin thinking a little more deeply, and peel back the layers of meaning in what we read and write, Class 6 have been looking at some wonderful poetry. We began with The Highwayman, thinking about the use of repetition and onomatopoeia, then I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. We looked at her use of metaphors, and how the poem can be interpreted as universal, before looking at the history behind it, including Sympathy by Paul Lawrence Dunbar. Finally, we looked at If You Forget Me by Pablo Neruda, where we looked at personification and his use of language to express intangible feelings. We learnt excerpts by heart and also wrote our own poems.

One of my favourite poems was I know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, as it has so many meanings to it and it can relate to anybody anywhere.

I really enjoyed learning about poetry especially The Highwayman because I understood it thoroughly; so I found it very compelling and gripping, anyone who hasn’t read it needs to read it – quickly!

I enjoyed the lesson on making our own poems as we could use any literary features you wanted to. Trying to visualise what all the refugees were thinking was quite hard to do and I am pretty sure it was challenging for everyone.  I hope we get to do more fun lessons like this in Year 6!

My favourite poem is by Maya Angelou and it is called ‘I Rise’ and it is about how no matter how hard things get, you will rise above them.

I loved reading about I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings! It’s sad but also happy at the same time.

I really enjoyed this subject and I now fell that I can write a poem that is meaningful and has a metaphor to show many different meanings.
