Stars of the Week: Polly & Sam

We really enjoy reading in Year 6.  Between us we have read a fantastic range of books.  This morning we discussed many of the books we have read and recommended them to each other. We discussed why we enjoy certain authors and genres and thought about why we like to challenge ourselves as readers and what we can learn from books. Look in the comments section for our Year 6 top recommended books.

MURDER MOST UNLADYLIKE SERIES Author: Robin Stevens
I would recommend all these books because they are really intriguing and you want to know what will happen next and who the murderer is. The fun part of reading these books is you can guess who the killer is and become Daisy and Hazel yourself; figure out who did it yourself!
With these books the killer would always end up the least suspected person.
It is about two girls called Daisy and Hazel, they created a murder solving gang called the Detective Society. They always seem to be around when a murder happens and try their best to solve it before the police do. This involves snooping around at night in out of bounds areas when they’re not supposed to.

ARTEMIS FOWL 1 Author: Eoin Colfer
I would recommend this book because it is extremely intriguing and leaves you on a cliff-hanger after every chapter and really want to know what happens next.
Throughout the book you want to find out about the LEP’s next move and if they are a step ahead or behind Artemis.
This book is about an evil mastermind Artemis Fowl (a 12 year old boy) and a magical organisation called the LEP.
They fight against Artemis to get Cap Holly Short back, in return Artemis wants a large amount of gold and the LEP’s magical
    secrets.

    Noughts and Crosses:
I really enjoyed the range of vocabulary in this book and the truthfulness. I read about why Malorie Blackman wrote this book, because of Stephen Lawrence’s death, and after further investigation I was vexed because of the police’s cover-up. I was also very angry to find out that the case lasted twenty years. I was inspired by Malorie Blackman for stepping out of her comfort zone and writing such a touching story.
It made me feel very interested in what was happening in the book. I would recommend this book to a sensible reader of the ages 10+.

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs:
I saw the film and I immediately told everybody about the film. And one of my friends said that there was a book and I wanted to read it right away. It is very good and I can’t put it down.

    Wolf Brother series
    By Micheile Paver

I like this book because it is very interesting and has a cliff hanger for nearly every chapter. All of the books include a character called Torak, Renn (his friend) and a wolf cub he finds in the first book. They fight together to destroy all the soul eaters to save the clans from danger.
I would recommend these book to people who enjoy adventure stories. While I read the books, I felt as if I had been transformed into the world that is set about three thousand years ago.

NOUGHTS AND CROSSES author = Malorie Blackman
This book is about a boy called Callum and a girl called Sephy. They live in a world where Noughts and Crosses are treated differently. Noughts and Crosses is the same as the races black and white. Crosses (black people) are the ones who get all the respect and authority, whilst Noughts (white people) are treated like animals.
I enjoyed this book because it was a really touching story. It made me feel what the character felt and it made me start to put myself in the characters’ shoes.
    I rate this book: *****

THE RED PYRAMID author = Rick Riordan
This book is about two siblings who discover they are connected to the Egyptian pharaoh bloodline. They go on a magical adventure to defeat chaos and evil and on the way they meet lots of Egyptian gods. Set, an evil god is trying to get chaos to power and Sadie and Carter try their best to stop him.
I like this book because it takes me to another world.
    I rate this: *****

    The Monster Calls: Patrick Ness
I really enjoyed this book but it was very sad and truthful. This stury helps a boy get through a very sad part of his mother’s life. The monster comes walking for Conor to let him let go of something that has been troubling him since his mum became sick. It all started with a dream a dream that change his life forever; a yew tree that told him truths about others to help him.
This made me feel very sad. I actually cried. I recommend this book to ages 8+.

The first book I like is The Hunger Games
The reason I like it is because it is entertaining because you know something is going to happen. It is quiet fast flowing and a hard read. It takes a long time to get into it but once you start you can’t put it down.
The second book I want to recommend is Wolf Brother.
The reason I like Wolf Brother is that something is always happening. It may be sad in the end when the boy loses something special to him but it is really intriguing and it is one of the best book I have ever read.

    Wolf Brother
My favourite book is wolf brother series because it’s like a survival book and already at the beginning there’s action they are being attacked and in most books there is action in the middle of the book unlike this one.

    A Monster Calls

The end of the book is very sad but apart from that the book is a very interesting. The boy Connor is a normal boy except he has nightmares that his mum is going to die soon the book ends with a conversation by Connor and his mum talking about the future…

    My top 3 books are:
1 Ludo and the star horse by Mary Stewart. I really enjoyed it because it is very sad but intriguing because Ludo goes on a journey through the star kingdom and has to find his horse, Renti. The book really makes you feel for Renti and Ludo and by the end I wished there was a sequel.

2 The mighty Dynamo by Kieran Cowley. I really enjoyed it because it’s about a boy who has been not allowed to play for his school in the School’s World Cup, then he has to create his own team and try to win the world cup.

    Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

I would highly recommend this book of wonders. Pullman’s use of vocabulary, similes, and metaphors blows you into the world that he is writing about. The book is about an inquisitive girl and her animal demon, who destiny awaits her to go on a freezing journey to the North. Who knows what’s in store for her?
