Issue #12 – 8/12/2017 – Christmas Service

[heading]Christmas Service[/heading]

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to Year 5 who lead our Christmas worship this morning at Southwark Cathedral. Their performance of ‘Holy Joe’ was stunning and really brought the Christmas story to life. They were accompanied by the beautifully singing voices of Years 2, 3, 4 and 6. The congregation were also treated to a performance of ‘Baby Jesus is Born Tonight’ by Nursery, Reception and Year 1.

We are currently thinking about our RE (Religious Education) provision by reflecting on how we can build on our strengths and improve any areas for development.

We are asking the whole school community for feedback (including children and staff) and we would be so grateful to hear from parents.

Please could you complete the online questionnaire which can be found on the school blog:
If you would like to complete a questionnaire but do not have access to the internet please ask the school office for a paper copy.

[box title="TFL Consultation - Dead

line 11th December " color="#0D83DD"]
TFL are proposing changes to Borough High Street at the junction with Marshalsea Road which we believe will greatly increase the volume of traffic using Redcross Way.

The proposal can be found here:
https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/a3-borough-high-street/
(or, for ease: www.cathedralprimaryschool.com/tfl will direct you there)

The main change is the proposal of banning vehicles turning left on to Borough High Street from Marshalsea Rd.

The school believes that this will cause many more drivers to use Redcross Way to access Union St, where vehicles will then access Borough High Street.

Redcross Way is a single-lane road which is insufficient in size to cope with its current volume of traffic. The increased volume of traffic from a busy A-road will only exacerbate the traffic problems we already experience.

We will strongly object to the proposals on the grounds of:

  • safety of the children being further compromised on an already hazardous single-lane road
  • concerns about increased levels of pollution, particularly when children outside in the playground
  • noise from increased volume of traffic

We understand that the Bankside Open Trust and Southwark Cathedral will be also objecting to the proposals.
At the moment, the work is proposed to commence Summer 2018.

Please do take time to complete the survey on the TFL website following either of the links above. The deadline is Monday 11th December 2017.

[box title="Valuing Parental Feedback" color="#0D83DD"]
The governing body and senior leadership team feel it is very important to listen to and act on parental feedback in order to continue to improve the school. With this in mind there will be the chance to speak to members of the senior leadership team on the morning of Friday 15th December.

This will take the form of a series of 15 minute, informal meetings where parents can constructively discuss their ideas with senior leaders and a governor. This is an opportunity to talk about whole school ideas not the progress of individual pupils.

Please could you contact the school office if you would like a meeting.

There is also a suggestion box in the reception area of the school if you would like to make a written comment.

As a leadership team we appreciate your support, value your feedback and are happy to listen to comments or suggestions.

[box title="The Cathedral Maths Challenge" color="#0D83DD"]
Last week, we had 64 entries into the C.M.C box, another new Cathedral School record.

Well done to this week's champion class Class 2. The quality of Class 2 entries was excellent, with children explaining how they solved their problems clearly.

On the Maths blog you can see some of the past solutions, as well as last weeks participants and class champions. Find the maths blog here.

Here is this week's challenge, that have a Christmas theme. A reminder for everyone to make sure that you read the problems carefully and put your name on your entry. Good luck!
