Issue #16 – 2/2/15 – Candlemas

[heading]Candlemas[/heading]

Dear Parents,

Last Friday Class 3 led our Candlemas worship at Southwark Cathedral. They read a passage from the Bible which describes Simeon’s role in the presentation of Jesus at the temple. Next they reflected thoughtfully on the importance of light in our lives and how Jesus is the light of the world.

Everybody thought that Class 3 were so poised and spoke with such clear voices. They impressed the congregation with their mature reflections and prayers.

Here are Class 3′s reflections on Luke 2: 22-36:

I know, like Simeon, that Jesus is a light for the world. Light shines and keeps me warm, which reminds me of God’s love. When I look at the sky I know he is there, when I look at the dark sky I feel scared but I remember God is always with me, not just me, but all of you.  Jimmy

Mary and Joseph were happy to hear Simeon’s words. I am happy when I feel the light of God’s love. Light helps me follow God’s path. It guides me and protects me. Without the light of God, I would feel alone in a dreary room.   With God’s light I can thank him for giving his only son to save us. Dinah

Light shines and keeps me warm which reminds me of God’s love. Light in the sky above our heads is beautiful. Especially on a warm Summer’s day. Luke

Light is like a candle in a gloomy room, it leads you and gives you a path, it makes you feel safe. If we feel sad, the light will make us happy because it reminds us that God is with us at all times. Deanna

Light guides me, like it guided Simeon. Light brings to our lives, love, peace and calmness. It is beautiful and endless. Without light, our houses would be dark, the streets would be dull and the cars would be frightening. This stunning radiance, makes me feel the world with Jesus and God. Oscar

If we did not have light, people would not find their way about. Light sparkles over water and lights up big cities. I love watching the rivers that shine in the sunshine. Sonny

Light makes me feel safe, warm and loved. Light also reminds me of my family, whom I’ll always be with. Light reminds me of God’s will. I know that the light of God is around me because I believe like Simeon did that Jesus is my Saviour. Ella

Light means to me that Jesus is the Light of the World. He shines like the bright stars above. I do my best to shine at school, at home and when I am with my friends. Mrinali

We are all the stars shining in the sky and God is the biggest star. We are all joined onto him! When we follow his guidance as Simeon, Mary and Joseph did, we shine brighter and follow his path of righteousness. Timi

If there was no light, we simply wouldn’t be able to live. Light makes me protected because if we didn’t have light, we wouldn’t be able to cross the road. It keeps us healthy and helps the plants to grow. Holly

Light is like the bright beaming sun. Light shines like God’s love. In the story of Simeon, he was given the path of light. The light is there for lots of reasons, not just to help you look down at your book when learning. It is also there to help you follow the path of the Lord. Marissa

When light comes out, the world is alive and seeds crack, trees grow. Light across our city is wonderful. We can see so far around us. Naima

I feel lucky to live in a world of light. It shines radiantly around my head. I know that God will keep his promises like he kept his promise to Simeon. Samuel C

We would despair without light. The story of Simeon reminds me of the story of the burning bush when God spoke to Moses. It also reminds me of the star that the three wise men followed and how gloriously it shone. Clemmie

Thinking about light reminds me of the story when God said, let there be light. Thank you Lord for light and for your light. Help us live in your light and let us see your brightness. Sophie

Finally Class 3 shared the prayers that they had written.

Dear God
I pray to you for my family who help me shine brightly each day. Thank you that when Jesus was born, he was the light of the world. Please help those who live their lives in darkness. Help them find happiness through your guiding light.
Amen

Heavenly father,
We are grateful that you shine on us. When you beam down, we feel your presence in the morning, when we are in the park playing and with our friends. Your glory is around us every day. Thank you for all you have taught us through the story of Simeon.

[box title="Class Led Collective Worship" color="#0D83DD"]

The collective worship led by individual classes are a special time each term when parents can see their children contributing to assemblies in a Christian context. We greatly appreciate the parental attendance at these times.

A reminder though, as has been the policy for years, we cannot interrupt collective worship to allow late parents to enter the hall.

We recommend parents arrive at the hall at 8.50. Collective worship begins at 8.55. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Please see list of collective worship dates below.

Year 2 - Tuesday 10th March

Year 1 - Tuesday 17th March

Year 3 - Friday 19th March - Easter Service at 9.30am at Southwark Cathedral

Reception - Tuesday 24th March

Class assemblies will take place in the school hall unless otherwise stated.
