Issue #19 – 09/03/2018 – Book Week

[heading]Book Week at Cathedral School [/heading]

Dear Parents and Carers,

Last week everyone at Cathedral School had a fantastic time taking part in a range of historical fiction themed Book Week events. It was wonderful that children got to enjoy excellent fiction whilst linking their learning to a history topic, reinforcing their knowledge in an engaging way.

Class 6 wrote diary entries and letters as characters from the text; ‘I am David’ by Anne Holm.

Class 5 developed beautiful setting descriptions for; ‘The Corn Grows Ripe’ by Dorothy Rhoads.

Class 4 wrote diary entries as characters during the mischievous and mysterious Tudor times using the text; ‘The
Thief, the Fool and the Big Fat King’ by Terry Deary.

Class 3 created setting descriptions for the book; ‘Romans on the Rampage’ by Jeremy Strong.

Class 2 developed setting descriptions for their class text; ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Class 1 wrote character descriptions and dairy entries as characters from; ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes.

Reception produced exciting newspaper articles for their class text; ‘The Egg’ by M.P Robertson.

Nursery wrote book reviews for the text; ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson.

Outcomes from all classes will be exhibited in creative and engaging displays in the Key Stage 2 corridor.

We were lucky enough to have an exciting visitor come to school! Kate Cunningham, led a workshop based on her own book ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’ with Class 2. Class 6 also enjoyed learning about her text ‘Vlad and the First World War’ when they got to see a page of her book from first draft to final copy; they also practised editing and then writing their own versions.

Children offered some wonderful responses when asked: ‘What did you enjoy most about Book Week?’

‘I loved how the adults dressed up!’ Harriet, Class 5
‘I loved the story telling session in the hall and the setting description work we did in class. Our book was really funny.’ Josh, Class 3
‘I loved the assembly, I enjoyed hearing what books teachers read as children and learning about new book characters.’ Ethan, Class 1

At Cathedral School we felt that one of the best things about Book Week was discovering new authors and remembering forgotten favourites. Collective Worship at the start of the week, focused on what World Book Week is all about, how important it is to celebrate all books including the Bible and shared favourite childhood books of Cathedral staff. Enid Blyton’s ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ proved to be a firm childhood favourite!

During Book Day, all children in the school read with a child from another class. Some children shared their favourite books while others shared stories they had written.

A very exciting part of Book Day was the traditional Cathedral School ‘Choose Your Favourite Story’ session. Children were able to choose a story from a selection before finding out which teacher would read it to them.
Staff and children dressed up as their favourite book characters and authors. The inventiveness that went into the costumes was incredible. The staff were so impressed that all children could not only name the character they had dressed up as but that they could also describe them and talk about the story where they appear, all in marvellous detail.

Please visit the class blogs on the school website to find out more about what happened during Book Week; do add your own comments to the blog.

Children have until Sunday 25th March to use their book token in participating bookshops; they are very aware which books they can get for free!

As a school, we also really appreciate parents making such an effort to ensure children had magnificent and imaginative costumes, making their enjoyment of the day so much greater, especially when faced with Siberian temperatures outside school.
