Curriculum Evenings

It was wonderful to see so many parents at the Curriculum Evenings this week.

These evenings are designed to help parents support their child’s learning at home.

If you were unable to attend, don’t worry, you will be able to collect any handouts from the meeting at Parents Evening next Wednesday and Thursday.

What did you find most useful about the Curriculum Evenings? This will help us when we are planning our next one.

Harvest

During our assemblies this half term we have been thinking about Harvest. This year we will be giving all contributions to the FareShare London which supports over 100 charities right across the capital, helping to feed vulnerable people including families on low incomes and people affected by homelessness, mental health problems or disabilities. Children will be asked to bring in donations of food during the week beginning 20th October. The FareShare Project have requested the following items: tea, coffee, sugar, tinned meat, tinned fish, baked beans, tinned fruit or vegetables.

Gardening Champions

Congratulations to Kim and Gardening Club who won 3 rosettes at last Friday’s Octavia Hill Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show in Redcross Gardens. Our rhubarb cordial and rhubard and ginger jam were awarded runner-up rosettes and our giant marrow won the prize for the largest vegetable. This will be eaten as part of school lunch soon.

Target Day

Today is Target Day here at Cathedral School.

Targets are set for reading, writing and maths and they are based on the 2014 National Curriculum. .

Targets are:

  • Challenging
  • Achievable
  • Personalised
  • Based on assessment data and teacher judgement

What is your reading/writing/maths target?

What are you going to do at school to reach your targets?

What are you going to do at home to help you meet and exceed your targets?

World Faiths Week

During our first week back, Cathedral School has been a hive of activity for World Faiths Week. Throughout the week the children have been investigating faiths from around the world and on Thursday we were very happy to welcome Father Andrew into Class 6, as well as Krishna from Hinduism Workshops for Schools who ran a workshop on the Hindu Faith for Classes 1 to 5. We practised traditional Hindu face painting, learnt how to tie saris and turbans, found out about the Gods of the faith and some of the stories about them.
It has been a great opportunity to have hands-on experiences, investigate something new or develop a more profound understanding.

What have you learnt during World Faiths Week?

What are you looking forward to?

As a staff we have all enjoyed welcoming the children back to school today and hearing about their holidays. The day started with a welcome back assembly where children were encouraged to think about what they are looking forward to at Cathedral School this academic year.

Responses included:

  • Getting to know my new teacher
  • Writing
  • Challenging myself
  • Maths
  • Making new friends
  • Lots of sport
  • Reading very exciting books

What are you looking forward to this year?

Good Practice Award

Cathedral School has been awarded a Good Practice Award by Southwark local authority for the quality of the school website, particularly the opportunities for pupil and parent engagement and interaction.

Cathedral School was one of 3 schools presented with a Good Practice Award. Our Deputy Headteacher Mr. Scott, who designed and built the website from scratch 2 years ago, collected the award from the Mayor of Southwark.

The judges felt our website was outstanding as it reflected the ethos of the school, the vibrancy of the curriculum and the enthusiasm of the school community.

trophy All teachers are responsible for their own class pages and subject blogs which showcase outstanding learning at school and further afield. The website also gives children a chance to extend their learning at home and celebrate achievements, while parents are kept informed. The local authority were also impressed with the high levels of interactivity and creativity – they loved reading the comments on the blogs!

We appreciate all of the positive feedback we regulary receive from the school community,

“The school internet and website is brilliant. It showcases on a regular basis the excellent work of the pupils and their teachers.” Parent 2014

“I would like to add that Mr Scott did an amazing job on setting up the website! A huge amount of work went into this and most of it in his ‘free’ time. Having just completed my work website, I really get how time consuming this is.” School Governor July 2014
