Sustainable Enterprise Week

Many thanks to the parents who gave up some of their time to visit classes and give presentations about their jobs as part of Sustainable Enterprise Week. We had such a variety of professions including a chartered accountant, on-line marketer, photographer, town planner and a journalist. The feedback from the children was excellent – one child said to their visitor, “I want to be like you”, highlighting the impact positive role models from the local community can have on pupils.

Jeff Kinney visits Cathedral School

Today Class 3 interviewed Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The interview will appear on Blue Peter soon. Not only did Class 3 spend time with Jeff Kinney, they also met Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton. All of the visitors commented on the impressive quality of the questions and the wonderful behaviour of the class. Well done Class 3 we are all very proud of you.

The Gift of Reading

We would really like to update the collection of books we have for children to read while they are at school and to borrow and bring home to share with their families. We have created a Wish List of books that we know the children will love and we are asking Parents, Families and Friends of the school if they would like to buy a book to help us support the children’s engagement in reading. If you would like to buy a book for school, please visit his link.

Lunchtime Library club

We were all very excited about the launch of Lunchtime Library club.  The aim of the club is to give children another opportunity to read and share books with each other.  Children have enjoyed sharing books, making recommendations and reading to one another and well as supporting younger children make choices and enjoy reading.

Second Parent’s Coffee Morning

It was great to see all the parents who attended our second Parent’s Coffee Morning with Emua today. The theme for this half term was ‘Bringing up happy children’. We had some great feedback; here are some examples for what parents thought of the session.

“The session was informative and helpful. The group talk opened my eyes on how I can negotiate and be firm. I should listen and respect my child’s feelings. We suggest more sessions.”

“A useful discussion in a very calm, relaxed, supportive atmosphere. Good problem solving ideas.”

“The group exercises were useful, I could feel how the child might be feeling.”

“Very clear and precise.”

“So beneficial and helpful, thank you.”

If you would like to attend one of these Coffee Mornings, or if you would like to come again please do let us know, either via the website or the School Office. If there is a particular topic you would like to focus on please also let us know.

Fun with rabbits and books!

On Tuesday the 13th November Reception class were very excited to host an event at school to celebrate Booktime, which gives away over a million free books each year to children starting primary school. Booktime is about supporting reading for pleasure and is run by independent charity Booktrust and Pearson.

The event included an art session based on one of the stories the children received as well as an opportunity to meet some real life baby rabbits. There was also a story reading session in the school hall with the actress Tamsin Greig which parents attended. The children had a fantastic time and it was great to be part of an event which shares our school aim of encouraging children to read for pleasure and to become confident and independent readers.

School Journey 2012

Year 6 have returned from a very memorable School Journey in Wiltshire safe and sound.

It was the first time we have visited Liddington so new activities were available to us. We chose canoeing and mountain biking as well as our usual options.

It was an educational trip too, as we developed our map reading skills in orienteering and increased our team work and resilience.

There is a School Journey Blog set up which has videos and photos from the 5 days, as well as hosting a Twitter Feed of the trip.

The blog can be found at www.CathedralPrimarySchool.com/schooljourney
