The first edition of DiGiNEWS
One of the clubs being offered this term is DiGiNews. In the club, sever reporters are tasked with finding what is happening in the classrooms of Cathedral Primary School. Here is the very first edition of ‘DiGiNEWS’.
Easter Service
Class 4 led our Easter worship at Southwark Cathedral. The performance was confident and full of energy. Well done Class 4!

Book Day 2017
Today children and staff at Cathedral School dressed up as their favourite book characters. As ever, the effort and ingenuity that went into the costumes was fantastic.
One of the best things about World Book Day was discovering new authors and remembering forgotten favourites. A very exciting part of the day was the ‘Choose a story session’. Children were able to choose a story from a selection before finding out which teacher would read it to them.

Book Week
This week is Book Week and we have already started having lots of fun learning about a new author, David Wiesner, and enjoying his amazing illustrations.
David Wiesner is one of the best-loved and most highly acclaimed picture book creators in the world. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages and have won numerous awards. Three of the picture books he both wrote and illustrated became instant classics when they won the prestigious Caldecott Medal: Tuesday in 1992, The Three Pigs in 2002, and Flotsam in 2007, making him only the second person in the award’s long history to have won three times.
David Wiesner has a wonderful gift of storytelling and illustration and many of us have been left open-mouthed by his complex, imaginative and beautiful illustrations. We are really looking forward to using our own wonderful imaginations after being inspired by his work.
During Book Week we are introducing our new Cathedral School reading challenge, Cathedral Book Bingo. The purpose of book bingo is to encourage children to read and enjoy a wide range of different authors and texts; this will support them develop new interests and find new favourite authors.
Children will be given a Book Bingo Challenge Card. The aim is to read as many of the books on the card as possible. There will be prizes such as book marks, pens, notebooks and certificates, for completing each challenge card and for working through increasingly demanding cards.
On Monday Year 6 really enjoyed recommending a range of books to each other and using those recommendations to create their own personalised Book Bingo Challenge cards.
We are also enjoying thinking about a range of different authors with each class thinking about who is their class favourite. Year 5 had some very interesting discussions yesterday about why a particular author was their favourite and used lots of persuasive language to try and convince each other.

Bad Hair Day at Cathedral School
The school grounds this morning became a flurry of colour, glitter, ribbons and hairspray. It could only mean one thing – Bad Hair Day had arrived at Cathedral School!
Fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital, the event was organised by one of our wonderful Year 6 students who has been looked after at GOSH. With many of Cathedral School students past and present being cared for at one stage or another by GOSH, it’s important as a community that we support the wonderful work that they do.
We had both local and hospital press present during our assembly, so you may see some familiar faces in the Southwark papers.

Google Expeditions
Today, children in Year 1 to 6 were lucky enough to step into the world of Virtual Reality. Darren from Google Expeditions visited Cathedral School, showing children how to use the Google Cardboard. This allowed them to step into places such as Venice and Rio De Janiero, without leaving the school hall. Year 1 and 2 were able to use tablets to explore a 360 degree view of under the sea. Safer Internet Day 2017
This year’s theme for Safer Internet Day is ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’ with a subtheme of ‘The Power of Image’, focusing on the ways that young people use image and video to communicate.
This morning during assembly the children talked about what they like watching and how they watch videos online. They heard about Smartie the Penguin and helped him make the right choices in order to stay safe online.

Southwark Cathedral Bells
Yesterday Years 3,4 and 5 were lucky enough to see the bells at Southwark Cathedral as they had recently been recast and baptised. This only happens every 100 years or so.
Since it was finally completed in the fourteenth century, the tower of the Priory of St Mary Overie, later the Parish Church of Saviour and now the Cathedral for the Diocese of Southwark, stood high above the surrounding community on the south bank of the Thames. It was the ‘Shard’ of its day, an architectural presence in this busy, congested, exciting district of London.
Within the tower, bells were hung, the first ring associated with the marriage in the Priory Church of King James I of Scots to Joan Beaufort, niece of the then Bishop of Winchester, Cardinal Beaufort on 12 February 1424.
