Class 5 at Southwark Cathedral

Thank you to Class 5 who led our worship at Southwark Cathedral this morning. They reflected on 3 passages from the Bible; Jesus Calls the First Disciples, The Wedding in Cana and The Parable of the Mustard Seed. They thoughtfully linked these stories to our school motto, “life in all its fullness” and each child planted a seed which they are going to nurture and bring to the Cathedral as part of their Year 6 leaver’s service next year.

Here are a selection of reflections:

“To me, this parable is like us all having many nets; all full of something that makes the world a better place. Some of our nets are full of kindness, or faith, talent, forgiveness and wisdom. We all have the nets; they represent who we are – however, we do not have a net for evil- because God always cleanses our sins. When our nets are full, we achieve something amazing, we are making ourselves better people.”

“Jesus said that the mustard seed will grow and grow to be the biggest plant, and what Jesus means is that the mustard seed is us, and we will grow in faithfulness. Also the school motto is full of peace, trust and worth, and it will last forever in us.”

“To me, the mustard seed represents a diminutive, new little baby, who is unnoticed and doesn’t yet know about the world. As the baby grows, it experiences life; faith, peace and truthfulness bloom, expanding inside the child. Branches forming on the tree represent growing successes and spreading the word of God. Life in all its fullness is like the tree, becoming the home of many creatures, unfurling its warmth and fullness. Birds build their nests in the tree’s loving arms; the sun sets and rises, animals are born, and leaves sprout, but the tree is always there.”

“I think that the parable of the water jars tells us that if you live life in all its fullness then others can enjoy it as well. In my mind, lives are the water at first, however, when we start knowing and enjoying things, we turn into the finest wine. The servants took the wine to the host and he was delighted; we can give that same delight to other people by living life to the full. Live life in all its fullness. That’s what we believe.”

“Wine is much more powerful and interesting, full of flavour and fun. To live life in all its fullness everyone should be having fun, enjoying themselves and living life to the greatest that it can be.”

Class 5 wrote prayers to end the service.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for all of the warm, happy souls in the world and the loving families that care endlessly for us.  Thank you for giving us life – challenging opportunities and colourful lives like wine. Thank you for your love, which surges through our hearts and bodies everyday. Thank you for giving us luck, kindness and peace in our lives. Thank you for helping our spirits grow and grow, like the mustard seed.

Amen

  • As I was at the side of the stage, the only face I could see (apart from the faces of Class 5) was Father Bruce’s, but I could tell that he was thinking deeply about your reflections on the Bible stories, the school motto and what they mean to you. As well as being proud of the wonderful speaking skills and the excellent writing, we can also be proud of the thoughtfulness and kindness which shone through your words.

  • I think it was a brilliant sevice, because our reflections were incredibly mature and thoughtful.
The idea for the seeds was great; it showed the meaning of ofv the mustard seed. Jesus used parables- to explain the kingdom of God- which was clever. We should respect our school motto it represents our lives in Gods’ kingdom. We linked our thoughts well to ‘life in all it’s fullness’.

  • It was a great experience, being able to perform in the Cathedral again. I thought everyone did amazingly! The prayers were lovely and all the readings and reflections were beautifully written; it was an amazing service. I also thought that the idea of putting seeds in the pot was quite clever, because they represented the mustard seed, and how it grew to be the most immense plant of them all!

  • I really enjoyed doing the cathedral service about our school motto: life in all its fullness. I thought that everybodys’ reflections were very interesting and the prayers were very thoughtful. Thank you to everyone who supported us and encouraged us, knowing that we would do well in the service. I liked the idea of looking after the seeds and getting them ready for our Year 6 leavers service when they will be large plants growing and nurturing! The bible verses were read with a lot of expression and everything was slow and clear. What do you think we did well?

  • I really enjoyed doing our cathedral service which reflects on our school motto: Life in all it’s fullness; I thought that everyone did really well and did our school proud. When it was my turn to go up to the lectern my hands were trembling and my heart was beating wildly. The lines that we read I thought was really good and that we used expression and it was slow and clear.I like the idea of us planting and nuturing the plant and showing it on the year 6 leavers service. As I was waiting for my turn I could see  Father Bruce really taking thoughts of our prayers ,and bible verses which meant he really took interest into our service. Thank you Miss Fullana for arranging this wonderful service, and the bible parables that you chose were really special. What did you think we did really well? What was your favourite part of the service?

  • I think our class did really well in our service and I hope the school took in our amazing reflections. I think we all worked really well in the rehearsals and I think everybody was really proud of themselves and the teachers were really proud of us too. 😉

  • I believe the cathedral service was a colossal success! Everyone read their lines audibly and slowly. Before I spoke I was overcome by tension; however, when I began to speak my nerves no longer even existed. My confidence increased rapidly as I spoke. After our reflections I can be sure that everyone understands our school motto: life in all its fullness. I would love to perform again in Southwark Cathedral soon. Lets hope the plant pot with our seeds in it will survive until the Year 6 leavers service. We would really like your opinions on our service!

  • I thought that it was an amazing service because every one played there part very well. I really enjoyed the cathedral service and Miss Fullana’s idea was very clever, of thinking that we could put  a seed in a pot as we finished our speeches. I am going to look forward to seeing are seeds grow.

  • I enjoyed presenting a service on our school motto, life in all its fullness; being on stage was not a frightening as I thought it would be-the experience of the mind-blowing Christmas service made me predict that it was going to be as scary as the Christmas service was. Although we had two days to prepare it, I think it went very well, everyone spoke slowly, clearly and loudly so that people could take in their messages and really think about how it affects our daily life. What did you think of our service?

  • I think our Cathedral service was good, because it was a way to express our feelings, and what the three bible stories and parables meant to us personally. It showed that everyone has different insights to everything, and it’s never wrong because it’s your opinion and all opinion’s count in God’s nurtured world.

  • I liked doing the assembly because it was unusual when, we planted the seeds in the pot; most people would have been thinking about why we were doing it, but when it got to ‘The Parable of the Mustard Seed.’ they would have understood what we were doing. I think people really took in what we were saying and it changed their life

  • When we had finished the song ‘ I the Lord of Sea and Sky’, I put down my song sheet, trembling with fear; and walked up to the lectern. “Please sit down,” I said apprehensively. So, that is what everyone did. Then, when I finally started my prayer, I slowly started to calm down and by the end of the prayer-I was not scared at all!

  • Haha! it was so funny when Father Bruce made the adults sing (they were terrible). Anyway, the service was really thoughtful about our school motto ‘Life in all it’s fullness’. I hope everyone at the back could hear me ;I tried to speak slowly and clearly. Overall it was a brilliant service.(I think)

  • Speaking in the cathedral was amazing, everybody was watching you, I could feel adrenaline flowing through my body as I spoke the first word of my speech.I really enjoyed it and so did class 5. Everybody learnt things about God’s love, and about how dull water is and how extraordinary wine is. I also think we helped the infants a lot by making sure they understood what we where trying to say. 🙂

  • I am really proud with our class because we were chosen to lead the service instead of any class. We really worked hard on writing our parts on three different stories which were all miracles. Father Bruce came to class 5 and we asked us questions about the three miracles – which helped us a lot because it helped us write our comments on the miracles…
