Safer Internet Day 2017

Safer

This year’s theme for Safer Internet Day is ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’ with a subtheme of ‘The Power of Image’, focusing on the ways that young people use image and video to communicate.

This morning during assembly the children talked about what they like watching and how they watch videos online. They heard about Smartie the Penguin and helped him make the right choices in order to stay safe online.

Smartie

What do you like to watch online?
What advice can you give to Smartie about how to stay safe online?

Who could you talk to if you see something upsetting or frightening online?

Southwark Cathedral Bells

Yesterday Years 3,4 and 5 were lucky enough to see the bells at Southwark Cathedral as they had recently been recast and baptised. This only happens every 100 years or so.

Since it was finally completed in the fourteenth century, the tower of the Priory of St Mary Overie, later the Parish Church of Saviour and now the Cathedral for the Diocese of Southwark, stood high above the surrounding community on the south bank of the Thames. It was the ‘Shard’ of its day, an architectural presence in this busy, congested, exciting district of London.

Within the tower, bells were hung, the first ring associated with the marriage in the Priory Church of King James I of Scots to Joan Beaufort, niece of the then Bishop of Winchester, Cardinal Beaufort on 12 February 1424.

What information did you fnd interesting following the trip?

Which historical figures might have sat beneath the bells?

Christmas Service 2016

Congratulations to Year 5 who lead our Christmas worship this morning at Southwark Cathedral. Their performance of ‘Mary, Mary’ was so accomplished and really brought the Christmas story to life. They were accompanied by the beautifully singing voices of Years 2, 3, 4 and 6. The congregation were also treated to a performance of ‘Mary had a Baby’.

Road Safety Week

This week is Road Safety Week at Cathedral School.

Road SafetyDuring assembly School Council reminded the school about ways to keep safe when crossing the road.

If you would like to read about the Highway Code for young road users please click on the link.

We also looked at activites available on the Think Education website including videos, activities, games, stories and information.

What are you tips for staying safe on the roads?

This week all children will be taking home activities to complete with a parent.

The Think! Education website also provides information for parents about how to help keep children safe on the road and home-link sheets to complete with your child. In addition you can order free road safety resources on the Department for Transport catalogue.

Welcome Back

As a staff we have all enjoyed welcoming the children back to school today and hearing about their holidays. The day started with a welcome back assembly where children were encouraged to think about what they are looking forward to at Cathedral School this academic year.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Healthy School Questionnaire

At Cathedral School we understand and value the importance of your health and well-being. Regular exercise, along with a healthy, well balanced diet will improve your potential both inside and outside of school. Healthy eating and exercise boosts brain power and makes you feel happy!

We would like to find out and understand more about your views on staying healthy and feeling safe and happy at school.

Miss Bailey and the School Council have devised a questionnaire to help with this.
