Flooding in Central Europe

This week, we have been writing news-reports about the flooding in Central Europe, which has affected the lives of thousands of people. One of our governors has been to Germany this week, and sent us eyewitness reports and a video which we have been able to use in our articles.

4th June 2013:

‘The rivers are swollen here and running dangerously fast. An hour downstream the towns are all flooded. Please find attached a short video I took of the Issar this morning. You can see how fast and swollen it is looking and it is nearly as high as the bridge. Another foot or so and it will break its banks. It is moving nearly as fast as the cars in the city and certainly faster than you can cycle. There are no boats on the river as it is far too dangerous.

The nearest flooding is about an hour away in a town called Passau (picture on BBC website). It hasn’t been raining today so everyone is hoping that the waters will subside soon.’

    THE FLOOD
In 2013 Germany had a ginormous flood. In the easten cities of the Czech Republic, rain fall went through the drains and into the rivers, which rose 2 meters everyday, meanwhile, the flood more immense daily. The more water falls, the faster the rivers rise.

This dreadful morning 2 people have been forced o shelter in McDonalds…

    FLOOD FLOWS THROUGH CENTRAL EUROPE!
The country of Czech Republic is in a state of emergency, as thousands of people are either trapped or stranded. They have been forced to evacuate, meanwhile, many are refusing; eventually, quite a few of these homes will end up in ruins. Water is rising rapidly, and flowing almost as quickly as the cars zooming around on the roads. People watch in despair, as the monstrous current gets faster, and the water level rises and rises. It slithers along the towns, destroying most things in its way. What will become of this disastrous event?

The people in the Republic are panicking; meanwhile, the residents of Germany, in Dresden, are beginning to exchange their hopes for desperation, as the water will finally hit their city, flooding it cruelly. “Fortunately, it hasn’t been raining today, so everyone is hoping the waters will subside soon!” exclaimed Ben, who is just as hopeful as the people. The tigers at Prague Zoo had to be tranquilized, so that the keepers could carry them out, as the zoo was in danger of flooding. Later on, the 600 year old Charles Bridge was closed, because of the risk of it becoming ruined. How would you feel if you were there, experiencing the dangers of the flood, with water bursting out in front of you, leaving you drenched?

    FOREIGN FLOODS!
A rapid, fast-flowing flood is engulfing the Czech Republic and is destroying everything in its snaking path. Initially, it started with torrential, tempestuous rain; not once did the devastated citizens dare to believe it could be such a ravaging, violent, hostile swamp. Later on Monday their worst fears were confirmed. Flood defences were installed by officials several days ago, however, if the water rises another 2 metres the barriers will be no use! Already 5 people have been killed in Prague and another 2 in Austria. Germany could be the next victim of the flood. How many fortunate people have been evacuated? There could be many left.

With the gulping flood eating the city the residents of Prague have no alternative but to evacuate the city. Many refused to abandon their homes despite the fierce flood but were eventually collected by boats battling in the water.” It was swollen here and is moving dangerously fast!” declared Ben Carroll, reporting from the River Elba. Tigers- from the zoo- have been forced to leave their enclosure after being tranquilized for the journey. The evacuees watch reckless with misery as their homes are completely ruined. People in Germany are anguished and anxious about the raging currents reaching their bursting banks. Ending lives, destroying cities, bursting banks and seeing helpless towns sink and vanish, who knows how long this treacherous flood will last?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR HOLIDAY SHELTERING IN MCDONALDS, WHILST WATER RAGED AROUND YOU?
Flooding has woven its way through Czech Republic heading towards Germany; meanwhile 5 are dead in Czech Republic and 2 in Austria, as well as 2 missing. Officials called for a state emergency- where soldiers help to rescue stranded residents – volunteers also helped to pile up sandbags. The Charles Bridge, which dates back from the 14th century, has been closed, leading to disappointed tourists; the water surrounding it brown, murky and cold.
We spoke to Alison, 47 and her husband Adrian, who came to Prague to celebrate Alison’s 47th birthday. “When we left England it was warm and sunny. We’re really disappointed,” she said, after seeking shelter in the local McDonalds.

Many families have been driven out of their homes, as water rises up to 5 metres. Flood barriers have been positioned, although many state that when more rainfall comes, they will be useless; firemen haven’t slept for 40 hours, because families are stuck on the rooftops of their houses, trapped.

FLOOD FROM CZECH REPUBLIC MOVING TO GERMANY

Have you ever witnessed a flood? There is a deadly flood moving quickly through Central Europe and into Hamburg. Firemen have been trying to save people from their house. A few people were uncertain whether to leave their houses because they thought burglars would come and take all there precious things. Czech Republic residents were really worried about all the rain, meanwhile Germany wasn’t worried until they saw some water coming in from the Czech Republic.
Thousands of the residents were stranded under bits of broken house parts, surrounded by the flood was moving so quickly it is almost faster than cars on the street.

Residents of Czech Republic had to act as fast as they could to go to the zoo and save the tigers, they put the tigers to sleep and moved them from the zoo so they couldn’t drown. Furthermore, the Czech Republic’s 600 bridge could be in danger of falling down.

In Czech Republic there was a magnificent flood, which was about 5m high. People are very frightened because of their friends, the flood and their houses. Soldiers are helping people evacuate from their homes, 7 people are dead already. The rivers are going faster than cars; many towns are blemished because of the dangerous attack. Animals have been tranquilised so they can be taken away from the danger of drowning in the zoo. Groups of people are saying, “This is terrifying and we are all going to make it.”

    Floods in Central Europe!
“Roads that look more like canals,” one news reporter said as she reported from the flooded parts of Czech Republic; meanwhile, residents are stranded in their homes, forced to evacuate. Would you like to be in that situation? In Czech Republic 5 people have died and further 2 died in Austria. Germany has been consumed with water; the good thing is, volunteers have agreed to help stop these floods by placing sand-bags there, while they still can. Govener Ben, who was in Germany, was an eyewitness to this tragedy, “The river is swollen and running dangerously fast!” he said.

    FLOOD FLOWS THROUGH EUROPE
A lot of rain has caused rivers to dramatically over-flow. Central Europe has been suffering from massive, rapid, swollen floods. Apparently, the floods haven’t been this bad since the last decade; reluctant people have been forced to evacuate their homes. Where will theses disastrous floods lead to next?

In the Czech Republic, soldiers and volunteers have gone out of their way to rescue the lives of the public and put up sandbags, but unfortunately 7 lives have been tragically lost! However, the fast, furious, flowing snake of water isn’t just in the Czech Republic – it’s beginning to travel across Europe to get to the sea!
Meanwhile, in Austria, already the death toll is two, because of the strong currents of the floods and a larger number of people have been lost, possibly dead. Other countries need to get ready for this monstrous disaster. The floods will soon be approaching Germany; at least then it will reach the sea and this deadly presence will cease to exist. In Prague, the Czech environment minister says, ”The story is not yet over here.”

    FATAL FLOOD!
Lately, in the centre of Europe, floods have become lethal, as well as disastrous. Rivers have burst their banks throughout Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and may well reach Hungary. Torrential rain has made rivers such as the river Issa, Danube and others terrors of their countries. A scene in the Czech Republic shows two men in a canoe paddling through the water, while the water levels have reached the top of a sign-post, a lamp-post and, nearly, the top of a roof!
At least seven people have been killed (two in Austria and five in the Czech Republic), with a further two people missing. The fourteenth century Charles Bridge has been closed despite it being a massive tourist attraction. Ben was on holiday in Munich when the River Elba flooded the city: “The river is swollen here and moving dangerously fast,” he later said, “It is moving nearly as fast as the cars in the city and certainly faster than you can cycle.”
Firemen have been working for hours, as the officials declared this was “a state of emergency” and soldiers have been ordered to put up flood barriers. However, if the water rises two metres more, then the waters will flood more places and become much more destructive. Everyone has baited breath…

A HELLISH FLOOD HITS GERMANY, AUSTRIA AND CZECH REPUBLIC!
Would you like to spend your holiday is a flooded country? I know I wouldn’t. To begin with, in Germany, Austria and Czech Republic there are tempestuous floods; leaving 7 people dead including 5 people dead at the weekend. This flood is very critical and has hit the River Elba, which is now 5 meters high, which is as high as our class ceiling.

Meanwhile, rescue soldiers are evacuating people out of their homes; some refuse to leave, while others are stranded. In the first place, it was raining heavily, and it was all going into the sea but the banks were starting to weaken, and finally they burst as the water floods the town; it was like a massive wall of water. Ben – who was a eye witness to this terrible flood; briefly said, “ This flood is flowing quicker than a racing car!”

    FLOOD HITS CZECH REPUBLIC
“This flood is flowing quicker than any other car and certainly faster than any cycler can cycle!” says Ben Carroll, a witness to this terrible flood. There are no boats on this fast-flowing river, as it is far too hazardous for them. The top of a bus was seen at the suface of the water before it was heaved out!

Many people would not leave their homes, although when it became too dangerous, they were forced to come out, later they would be stranded; unfortunately people are still refusing to leave their unsafe homes. To be continued…

2000 firemen were forced to work 40hrs non-stop until they had a 3hrs rest! Volunteers came to help build a barrage to force the water back into the river; 98% of the citizens volunteered to help.

5 poor people were found dead in Czech Republic meanwhile another 2 were found dead in Austria (also 2 missing). I hope this flood soon comes to an end, don’t you?

FLOODING KILLS SEVEN PEOPLE IN GERMANY.
On June 5th there was an immense flood, which left seven people stone dead. Soldiers are cleaning up moist mud from the soggy roads, meanwhile two citizens, Alice and Adrian, had to shelter inside a McDonalds restaurant. “We only came outside and found ourselves standing in 5 meter of water,” they explained.
The flood has been going through Germany and the Czech Republic. The question everyone is asking is: When will this stop?

    A TERRIBLE FLOOD
The River Elba has already flooded Austria and Czech Republic and is now heading for Hamburg in Germany. This horrible, awful, terrible flood has already killed seven people in Czech Republic and two in Austria, how many more people would this flood kill? Already 5m tall, by the weekend this flood might rise by another 2m. This is terrible news because zoo keepers have had to tranquilise the tigers so they could move them out without getting bitten. This is terrible news because the tigers and other Zoo animals are being pushed out of their homes; where would the animals sleep?

    FAST-FLOWING FLOODS!

Water rises dangerously in towns and cities in Germany; meanwhile, fire-fighters are trying their best to help, but Germany and many other countries and towns are in a “State of emergency!” The height of the River Elba is getting increasing -which means people are stranded inside their houses. People are refusing to leave their homes and the water is already 5m high. Animals have been taken out of Prague zoo, as the floods are very near; but are the people okay

“We left England yesterday and it was sunny and warm. We didn’t expect this; we don’t even have our raincoats,” wept Alison, a tourist visiting the Czech Republic.

Would you like to spend your holiday sheltering in McDonalds from the flood? No, I wouldn’t either.
A couple, from London, went to Prague thinking  that they would have a perfect holiday, but instead they were sheltering in McDonalds from the flood! How bizarre is that!
Thousands have been put up in emergency shelters waiting for the waters to recede so they can get back to their homes.Authorities evacuated a nursing home and turned off electricity in several parts of the city. Where the Saale river meets the Elbe, about 3,000 people had to leave their homes.
“The coming days will be extreme and difficult,” Magdeburg’s mayor, Lutz Truemper, told news agency dpa.

People are hoping that the water will subside soon, others are sheltering homelessly; zookeepers are having to remove their animals carefully. They have to use a strong gas to knockout the lethal animals such as: Tigers, Lions, Monkeys, Baboons and many more; they move them to somewhere safer for the animals. Imagine you sheltering in a McDonalds for a whole week? How would you feel? What would be your emotions? I would feel so bored trapped in McDonalds for a week. My emotions would be not very happy at all! I spoke to my friend she said, “This is terrible, I feel really bad for the people who have to shelter in a McDonalds for a week or so.”  I spoke to my mum, “I wish it wasn’t here it is damaging properties, and destroying lives!” I strongly agree with what my mum, what said she is correct. I give good luck to all the people stranded; I wish them the best.
