Reading Comprehension Tasks

Instructions for completing these reading comprehension tasks.

1. Carefully read through the text.

2. Read the questions and circle the correct answer.

3. If the question needs a written answer, write short sentences that give the answer without using any extra words. In reading tests we don’t get extra marks for writing long elaborate sentences. Just give the correct information in short sentences.

We will work through the answers during the start of the our Literacy lessons (one task each week), you will need to have read the passages and answered the questions before each morning’s Literacy lesson.

I read the Inferences Worksheet 1 and I think that Max was upset because he really wanted to fly his kite as the text says: Crack! Thunder struck and rain poured.

Max stared blankly out the window, trying to contain his emotions that raged like the weather. He was beginning to lose it. Dropping the kite from his hand, Max broke out into full sob.

    Task 4-

    1. What type of job does Paul do?
The type of job is probably very dirty and makes him so muddy from head to toe. Also so smelly that he needs to take a shower.

    2. Describe Alice:
    Clean
    Neat
    Tidy
I think this because in the story Alice requires Paul to be “presentable”.

    3. What relationship do Alice and Paul have?
I think that they are husband and wife, I think this because Alice helps Paul and they live together.

    Task 4
    1)
What type of job does Paul do?
Definitely a tough and dirty job as after every day of work he would have to get his clothes washed straight away.

    2) Describe Alice:
    ~ Precise
    ~ Helpful
    ~ Neat
I think this is because Alice is so caring around Paul, helps him to clean his clothes and wants every thing to be right for him.

    3) What relationship do Alice and Paul have?
Surely a very close relationship, maybe husband and wife. This is because Alice looks after Paul so well and does every thing for him to make sure everything is ready. Plus, they obviously live in the same house because in the text, it says ‘Alice left a new garbage bag tied to the porch railing for him every morning.’

    Task 2 –

I found this game interesting because I learnt about the game of chess, Blitz chess and the history of chess (my iPad didn’t let me answer the questions but I spoke about them to my mum).

Metal Detectors make better and safer lives. I can prove this by referring to the text. It says:
Metal Detectors are also used to make sure broken needles aren’t stuck in clothing. This makes it safer for us so we don’t get pricked and cut by the broken needles when we put our clothes on!

I did Inferences worksheet two here are my answers:
    1 Why is Kyle distraught?
Because his report card came out today and he did not get a good grades.
1a How do you know this?
Because he put his report in the soup can and that implies that he did not want anyone to see the insides.
2 Why does Kyle put the report card in a soup can?
Because he proud of his grades and did not want to get in trouble.
2a  How do you know this?
Because he has a bit of a temper and is acting angrily to his bad school grades.
3   Was Kyle’s report card good or bad and why was it like that?
It is bad and probably it was that  way because of his bad attitude and his lack of focus.
3a How do you know this?
Because he had a bad attitude and he forgot about his report after he put it in the  can.

    1.Why is Kyle distraught?
Because his report card came out today and he didn’t get a good report from his teacher.

Because he shoved the report in the soup can then put it into the garbage can implying that he didn’t want anybody to see the actual thing.
    2. Why does Kyle put the report card in a soup can?
What was in it and he was not risking him getting in trouble.
    How do you know this?
Because he is acting aggressive towards his bad actions in school.
    3. Was Kyle’s report card good or bad and why was it like that?
It was bad and it was that way because he didn’t contribute in class and he has a bad attitude to learning.
    How do you know this?
Because he might ashamed of it by his actions.

    Task 4
“Tommy!” Mom called out as she walked in the front door. “Tommy,” she continued shouting, “I sure could use some help with these groceries. There was still no reply. Mom walked into the kitchen to put the grocery bags down on the counter when she noticed shattered glass from the picture window all over the living room floor and a baseball not far from there. “I’m going to kill you, Tommy!” Mom yelled to herself as she realized that Tommy’s shoes were gone.
    Answers
What happened to the window ?
Tommy must of broke it by playing baseball in the house.
How do you know this ?
Because you use a baseball bat to hit a ball and if you play a ball game in the house you are most likely break something
    Why did Tommy leave ?
Because he didn’t want to face the consequence

Today was a special day in Ms. Smith’s class. Some of the children were walking around the room, some of them were standing in small groups, and some of them were at their desks, putting finishing touches on cardboard mailboxes. After coloring a cool flame on the side of his racecar mailbox, Johnny hopped out of his chair, strutted over to Veronica’s desk, and dropped a small white envelope into her princess castle mailbox. Veronica blushed and played with her hair. While this was happening, Bartleby was frantically trying to put a small white envelope into everyone’s mailbox. After giving one to Ms. Smith, Bartleby pulled out a medium-sized red envelope from his pocket. He blushed and tried to put it in Veronica’s mailbox, but it wouldn’t quite fit. Bartleby struggled with it for a few seconds and then ran off with the envelope. Veronica rolled her eyes and popped her gum.

    Why is today special ?
Because it is Valentines day .
Which boy does Veronica like ?
     Johnny
    Why did  Bartleby run?
Because he has a crush on Veronica but he is shy .
