MEXICO

Mexico

Class 6 will be looking at Mexico for International Week. We will be learning the traditional song: Cielito Lindo; making papel picado bunting, dressing up and learning about Mexican religion and history and Mexico today. This also ties into our History topic of Aztecs.

It is a fascinating country, here are some links to find out more!

I have really enjoyed learning about Mexico. The song we’re going to sing -for our International Evening video, is very nice, but one of the verses is very strange. The lesson about the Aztec Gods was very interesting; I didn’t know anything about the Aztec Gods before that lesson. I also loved learning more about the Aztecs. The art we’ve done in class is amazing, I think everyone has loved learning about Mexico so far. I can’t chose, when it come to my favourite activity, I just can’t chose.

My favorite part of learn about Mexico was the art (of course). I liked the artist called Diego Rivera. I liked the lilies he painted because they look easy to draw however they are not at all simple to paint. The art of the revolution is really detailed and as unsettling or as calm as Diego Rivera wanted it to be. If you look carefully enough you will always be able to spot a hidden meaning within the drawing.

My favourite thing about learning about Mexico during International Week was drawing the same type of pictures that Diego Rivera drew, and learning about how he made his drawings unique, by not copying anyone else, and by creating his own unique style, and making new art progress from then on. I also enjoyed briefly dressing up in a Mexican outfit, while Brenda and Margaret took photos. I really enjoyed this week, as we were lucky enough to do some cycling profiency, AND learn exciting new things about Mexico.

International week has been amazing – so far. There will be a lot more to come later on. My favourite activity has been make traditional Mexican flags out of tissue paper, the colours red white and green (the same as the Mexican flag). It is similar to making snowflakes, like you do at Christmas, but in a different shape. Some Mexicans can make extremely detailed banners with complicated pictures or symboles on the front; ours were simple to make, however also fun and once we’d finished, the symmetrical patterns on them were successfully beautiful.

I have really enjoyed studying Mexico this week (it makes it even better if you have a Spanish teacher)! We have learnt many things including: Tenochtitlan, Mexico, Mexico City, Aztecs, a song called Cielito Lindo, famous artists and learning how to draw certain Mexican objects or beliefs. But my favourite was learning about the Aztecs. I loved it so much that when Miss Fullana came to check my book and said: “That’s perfect, its enough.” I replied with: “Oh Miss, please can I take it home and do some more, I am really enjoying this topic!” So I continued researching the Aztecs at home and still loved learning about it! To conclude, if you ever learn at Mexico-you will really enjoy it. Thank you Miss Fullana!

An interesting thing I learnt was the Aztecs would bring people from the battle grounds and then sacrifice them to their gods, as their gods were very fond of blood and flesh. Also I had learnt that Mexican people would celebrate the Day of the Dead – instead of sobbing about it. It is normal to see a skull with lovely patterns on it, in a Mexican house. As well as learning how Mexican artist Diego Rivera had changed art in Mexico, before they would often copy from the European style but he did not and made his own art work – he would paint people doing things but they would have to be thought about, to be understood.

I really enjoyed writing a diary entry as if I was in the crowd of a Mexican Easter! It was really exciting learning that the person who played Jesus – a man was picked every year – had to carry a 90KG cross and walk 28KM, I also liked learning about the Day of the Dead (we got to draw skulls and decorate them). Mexico is a very interesting place.

The thing I enjoyed the most this week about Mexico was: making flower designs out of paper in the colours of the Mexican flag, as it was something different that we learnt and that we didn’t know how to do.

This week I really enjoyed learning the history of Mexico, I think the Aztecs were fascinating! I think they were also crazy, because they had wars with other tribes to get as many human sacrifices as they could. Learning about the Day of the Dead was fun; we drew skulls and decorated them in our own designs. Thank you Miss Fullana for a brilliant week!
