Migration – do you think push factors would effect you and your family in the future?

The devastating cyclone (Cyclone Phailin) that is currently effecting the eastern seaboard of India is a classic example of a push factor that may encourage someone to migrate away from where they currently live. You may have seen the terrible scenes on the news and it is hard for us who live in London to imagine what it would be like to be so badly effected by adverse weather conditions such as those currently being endured by the people of Eastern India.

So my question is this, if London suffered a natural disaster such as this in the future, would it be enough of a push factor to make you leave your home and your friends and family? Do you think experiencing a natural disaster is something that you could not tolerate, so you would have to leave where you live and migrate somewhere new? Or do you think that in times of crisis it’s important to stay where you live and help rebuild your community? If everyone left a community that was effected by disasters then London would have ceased to exist after the Great Plague and The Great Fire of London hundreds of years ago.

This is a dilemma that many families are faced with across the world. What’s your opinion, let me know in the comments section.
