As I have been on the punctuation game on the blog, I have learnt that:
When you use dashes the subordinate clause goes in the dashes;
I also learnt that you have to stop that particular clause with another dash;
I learnt that you can use colons for lists (as I have done); and
I learnt that you put a full stop in place when you express a complete idea.
I learnt that a apostrophes for possession go after the name of something or someone. E.g. The duck’s quack could be heard for miles.
Number – 17
Category – Colons
The Error – Extending a sentence with a colon when a semicolon or dash should be used
An example
Take my toy car: I don’t need it anyway. wrong
Take my toy car; I don’t need it anyway. right
Number – 41
Category – Commas
The Error – Not putting a comma after an adjunct at the start of a sentence
An Example
Next time you make a mistake cross out with one line. wrong
Next time you make a mistake, cross out with one line. right
Number 50
Category – Exclamation Marks
The Error – Using more than one exclamation mark
An Example
Never employ little children!!!!!! wrong
Never employ little children! right
In my writing I will remember to not use a full stop before a conjunction.
I learnt that you shouldn’t use an exclamation mark when you don’t need to.
Example: I don’t think you should touch that!
Correction: I don’t think you should touch that.
And remember not to add more exclamation marks when you don’t need to.
Example: Never employ handsome servants!!!
Correction: Never employ handsome servants!
I’ve learnt that you only use one exclamation mark not four or three!
In my writing I will remember how to use conjunctions – by not putting a full stop before one because I think it will help me with my work and definitely up-level my work.
I learnt that:
‘Dog’s look up to us, and cat’s look down on us.
I prefer pig’s – they treat us as equal’s.’
is the wrong punctuation.
You shouldn’t do the ‘s when you’re writing about plurals.
This is right:
‘Dogs look up to us, and cats look down on us.
I prefer pigs – they treat us as equals.’
When I’m writing, I will remember to not put a full stop before a conjunction.
Also I will remember to only put one exclamation mark. Eg.
That was so much fun! (Correct)
That was so much fun!!!!!!!! (Incorrect)
In my Literacy writing I will use apostrophes to denote possession (an apostrophe usually goes before the last letter of a word and tells you that something belongs to someone) e.g. The man’s dog went missing for over a week.
In my writing, I will remember to use a semi-colon when taking a small breath at all the moments that I need to.
In my writing I will remember to put an apostrophe in the right place to show that it is that person’s object, for example “Eleanors toy” this is the wrong phrase.
This is the right phrase “Eleanor’s toy”
