Geography Projects – Somewhere Special

SOMEWHERE SPECIAL

We are excited to launch our new Spring Term Projects which will be geography-based this year. The title for the projects is ‘Somewhere Special’, and you should think of a place in the world that is special to you, that you would like to research in more depth, and that you can create a project about.

You might like to research a country where you have relatives.

You might like to research a place that you have visited on holiday that has special memories for you.

You might like to research a place that you know about, and has always interested you, but you’ve never visited.

You might like to research the area where you live in more detail.

The choice of location is up to you; you can research a city, a country, a mountain, a village, a lake or any other geographical location. In addition, you can decide how you would like to create and present your project; you could create a video guide, a poster, a diorama, a slideshow or anything else that shows what you’ve learnt.

Step 1 – Your teacher will give you a Project brief to fill in which should be returned on Wednesday 21st January.

Step 2 – Your teacher will advise you if the location you have chosen is suitable and then you can start working on the list of Questions to be answered when creating your project.

Step 3 – During the last week of this half-term, your teacher will collect in your project to review your progress and advise on how to improve your work.

Step 4 – On Tuesday 24th March 2015, we will hold a Project Exhibition in which you will show your projects to children in other classes (during school time) and to parents (at the end of the school day).

When you are creating your project, make sure that you try to refer to the following things:

1. Mapwork and Compass Directions;

2. the different features of the physical geography of your locality;

3. the different features of the human geography of your locality; and

4. Fieldwork and research.

Enjoy researching your special location and making your projects.

    I can’t wait to do this project because the place I’m doing has loads of landmarks and it has the oldest flag in the world.

    On my project, I’m going to study NYC (New York City) because I have family there. The reason i chose this is because 1) we are studying North America and 2) its an interesting place to work on.

    I’m doing my “Somewhere Special” geography project on Africa, because I have family in the southern part of Africa and because I have been there lots of times, so I know quite a lot about it. I can’t wait to see everyone else’s projects at the exhibition and show mine as well!

      That’s great to hear Rachel, it might be a good idea to choose a certain country or city within Africa as it is a very big continent and each location would deserve its own project. There’s lots of interesting areas in the southern part of Africa so I can’t wait to see your final project.

    For my ‘Somewhere Special’ project I am doing South Africa as I have family and friends there. As it is so big there, I am focusing on the Western Province and Kwaa-Zulu Natal.

    I am doing mine about Texas in United States as I have been there and I have family there. It is especially meaningful because it has always been an important part of my life.

    I love this project, I want to be really creative as I am doing Jamaica and it has loads of fantastic things to talk about. This is a great opportunity to show my creativeness – the reason I am studying on Jamaica is because:
    1) I have family there;
    2) it has fantastic things;
    3)I know all about it;
    4) I love it there; and
    5) they are known for famous people.
    HOPE YOU CAN TAKE A STEP INTO MY WORLD!

    I am really excited about doing my project and seeing everybody else’s at the exibition. I think that it is a great opportunity for the year threes to show how creative they are. My favourite bit is when I do art – like doing a diagram – because I love being creative and arty. A good way of writing is when you get some books from the library and copy it and put it in your own words. It also helps if you try and go to that place and you can ask your family some questions to help you. Doing projects is probably my favourite homework that we get given in the term.

      I’m glad to read that you’re enjoying the projects so much Bea. I always enjoyed studying geography when I was at school – you can’t beat a good bit of map work! Have you managed to do much fieldwork about your special place?
