Stars of the Week: Aldara and Bethany

Yesterday, Year 5 visited the Ragged School Museum (where Dr Bernardo used to be the Headteacher) to experience what it was like for the very poorest of children.

Victorian schools were very strict! You needed to keep your back straight at all times…

And no fidgeting…

Or else you would have to wear the dunce hat!

Before school you should always make sure you have a wash…

clean and iron your clothes…

beat the carpets and fix your shoes!

Next week we are looking forward to Book Week where we will be learning about Malala Yousafzai.

Stars of the Week: Zara and Desmond

Yesterday, Year 5 visited the CLC to take part in a code-breaking workshop. We had a great time and learnt so much thanks to our knowledgeable teacher – Caitlin. We used clues to crack codes and even had a go at writing our own morse code! This has made us very excited for when we start learning about WW2 later on this year.

Stars of the Week: All of Class 5

Yesterday we went back in time and we celebrated History Day Victorian Style!

We began the day as usual by singing the National Anthem…

We then did our learning for the day focused on the 3 R’s: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

The Inspector for Education arrived and did a spot inspection of children’s hands and boots. I’m afraid to say dirt was found…

Next week we shall try to ensure that silence is next to godliness and remember that children should be seen and not heard.

This week Year 5 have made clay tiles as part of our Art unit. We are looking forward to painting them later on today.

Next week we will start to make our clay pots!

Stars of the Week: Dawud and Beatrix

This week, Year 5 have been learning how to separate materials that have been mixed together. We separated water and sand using filtration paper and a funnel, we separated rice and paper clips using magnets and we are separating water and sand through the process of evaporation but this is an experiment that we will need to observe over time!

Year 5 drew accurate diagrams to demonstrate their knowledge of how to separate materials.

Next week Year 5 will be learning about who Florence Nightingale was and why she was an important figure in the Victorian period.

Stars of the Week: Chidubem and Anton

This week Year 5 began to look at famous inventions from the Victorian period. Did you know that the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876? It looks a bit different to the telephones that we use today!

We discussed the impact of such inventions on the Victorians. The flushing toilet was also invented during the Victorian period!

Next week we will be looking at mixed numbers and improper fractions in Maths.

Stars of the Week: Meadow and Dorianne

This week Year 5 started to read our book for this half term Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

We discussed what workhouses were, who would live there and what would happen within one. Today we are going to write a setting description about them. We look forward to sharing them with you.

Next week we are going to be learning about fractions in Maths.

Stars of the Week: Salma and Christian

On Monday, Year 5 visited Wagamamas where we learnt all about the importance of food hygiene and what Wagamama does to ensure that everyone’s dietary requirements are met. Did you know, they even have a special chef dedicated to cooking food for people with allergies or an intolerance!

Thank you to Gill and the rest of her team for opening up the restaurant early for us and for ensuring that we had such a wonderful and informative trip.

Stars of the Week: All of Class 5

A massive well done to Year 5 on such an accomplished and confident performance of ‘Christmas Presence.’ You were true professionals and should feel very proud of yourselves.

Year 5 had an extra treat as well as the author of the play (Sheila Wilson) came to watch as well! Thank you Sheila – we hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we did performing it!

Next week Year 5 are looking forward to visiting Wagamamas.

Stars of the Week: Danielle and Max

This week Year 5 have been making some beautiful art work for our Christmas board display. Everyone worked really hard to think about what would make an interesting and unusual design and I am really proud of such a collaborative class effort!

Next week we will be starting to read An Inconvenient Truth and beginning to discuss the effects of global warming on our environment.
