Celebrating Nelson Mandela

As part of our Literacy topic on biography, we have looked at the life of Nelson Mandela, the great leader who recently passed away. Inspired by him, and news reports from the time, we wrote about the day when he took the presidential oath and changed the world forever.

Nelson Mandela and the dove of peace

Could you imagine being in the crowd that day?

How does he inspire you?

Why was Mandela so special?

What did he achieve?

Mandela was a great leader, and I hope the new generation has been inspired by his patience, hope, forgiveness and bravery. I wish that everyone could be so fair and just!

I think Nelosn Mandela is an incredible man, and he brought peace, harmony and reconciliation to all. If I was in that crowd, I would have felt unmistakably jubilant, and wonderful thoughts would fill my mind. Nelson Mandela recently died, therefore, thousands of people gathered together to remember him, and all he did for us. I hope everyone is grateful for what Nelson Mandela did for us, as the world may still be filled with unhappiness if Nelson Mandela hadn’t served us.

Nelson Mandela was a very good man and a role model to everyone who has spoke of him. We should all respect how he helped to change the world. Everyone loved him. They still do. Unfortunately he died, but we will never forget him. He was the Lion of Africa.

I have written an acrostic poem about things that happened during Mandela’s life
    REMEMBER

Remember he who changed our lives
Ever strong Nelson fought, although it got him imprisoned
Mandela believed we all have rights – no matter our race or religion
Everyone deserves to be treated the same in hospital, this wasn’t the case so Mandela wanted to change this
Men and women both black and white voted for the first time on 10 May 1994
Because Mandela, who won president of South Africa, wanted reconciliation, people all over the world bond together
Even though we are young we have the spirit to change the nation by words
Remember Nelson Mandela, he changed our lives

On a day like no other the great leader Mandela was elected to be the first black president in South Africa, the jubilant crowd was delighted to know that Nelson was the president of South Africa. And this time the election was multiracial. So I think Nelson Mandela should be proud of what he has done for me and all of you – if it were not for him the country would still be in the state it was before.

It was the celebration of a century when he won the election! Freedom! Throughout his walk down the aisle; all that went through his mind was the word ‘FREEDOM’. In 1993 Mandela won the Nobel Peace prize, and this was a great achievement. His optimistic personality helped him to have hope in life; Mandela will be remembered.

Nelson Mandela was a role model and an inspired lots of people. He endured on as those that were trying to bring him down failed, the unique figure is an example to all young or old – adults, teenagers or children. His funeral will be remembered, maybe more than a century. Doing what he knew was right he stopped racism, discrimination and segregation; he thought that both black and white should be treated fairly. The man with an indestructible spirit continued to succeed as elation and joy spread through the abandoned streets of Pretoria. The tender-hearted leader helped stop racial prejudice for he knew it was unfair, fighting for what he knew was right Nelson battled until he won. At last the battle was over!

There may never be a day like this again! Before Nelson Mandela was elected, the citizens of South Africa were petrified that there would be food shortages and civil wars; however -in a heartbeat, in 1994, on the 10th May, Nelson became the first black South African president, consequently the streets were filled with a cocaphany of singing and screaming in jubilation! The dream to make the nation’s rights equal had come to life. Because Mandela spent 27 years in prison, black people were able to be free. If Nelson Mandela had not done what he did, the world could be in the same state today!

The reconciliation. After Nelson Mandela was elected, reconciliation began to happen between the black South Africans and the white South Africans. The euphoria was amazing! Everyone followed him. Tens of thousand of people supported him – in fact lots of famous people (for example Desmond Tutu and Prince Phillip) were encouraging him from jubilant. After he was released from prison, Mandela realised he was free like a bird and wasn’t trapped in a cage that others had made. Because Nelson Mandela was an amazing leader, everyone wanted to help him release the message of hope and forgiveness.

On the day that Nelson Mandela became President of South Africa, euphoria was all that was in the air. Before the election in 1994, everyone had the fear that a civil war would break out; that the people who had had all the power – the army and the police- would retaliate. Now that there would be a multi-racial election, they could have all their power taken away from them. They would be defenceless. Mandela’s years after coming out of prison were characterised by forgivness and peace so, as soon as Mandela became president, the army and police supported him. A troop of military helicopters flew past, trailing the new South African flag. Cheers came from tens of thousands of people. The atmosphere was amazing.

On the day Mandela was elected, the air was full of euphoria; crowds buzzed, danced and sang, because they were elated. Before, there was a fear of civil war between the government and civilians. Mandela – who was 76 when he was elected – explained that he would make the Republic of South Africa better. Troops of military helicopters flew by sporting the new South African flag proudly; although everyone was joyful, there was a lot work to do!

The things Nelson Mandela has faced were really harsh, but when he was released from jail, he wasn’t cross or angry, instead he made a new start and he wanted a reconciliation of all the nations. Nelson Mandela is an INCREDIBLE man, and we have lots to learn from his life.

We will always remember Mandela as an amazing  person, who stood up for his rights and then forgave the people who didn’t treat him right.

Nelson stood up for his rights. He was not afraid.  He knew what was right and what was wrong and the racists were wrong. Mandela and other people suffering were right. Everyone deserved all those rights; the government were wrong to take away their rights. He believed that everyone should be treated equally.

Nelson Mandela is a famous icon for his work to bring peace and hope to South Africa.  Mandela will be remembered especially for the day he slowly walked to freedom, waving his hand in the air. This day may be one of the most amazing in most peoples lives, I know it is for me!
