An arithmetic challenge for the holidays

Everyone has worked so hard on the weekly Arithmetic Challenges and all that hard work was rewarded with some excellent results on the recent tests. To further improve your arithmetic skills, work through these tasks over the holidays:

Task 1 – Halving and dividing by 2

Task – calculate half of all the even numbers from 2 up to 30.

Count in 2s, starting at 0 and stopping at 30. Write down all the numbers you counted.

Write your answers in these three different ways:

1) Half of 20 is 10;

2) 1/2 of 20 = 10; and

3) 20 / 2 = 10.

Task 2 – Subtracting by counting on

Task – calculate the difference between any two 2-digit numbers by counting on from the smallest number to the biggest number.

Choose any 2-digit number then choose another 2-digit number that is smaller than it.

Start at the smaller number and count on until you reach the bigger number.

Write your answer as a number sentence, e.g. 53 – 38 = 15

Task 3 – Calculating one third of numbers

Task – calculate one third of numbers up to 30.

Count in 3s, starting at 0 and stopping at 30. Write down all the numbers you counted.

Write your answers in these three different ways:

1) One third of 30 is 10;

2) 1/3 of 30 = 10; and

3) 30 / 3 = 10.

Task 4 – Solving subtraction problems

Task – use adding knowledge to solve subtraction problems

Add together two 1-digit numbers.

Then turn the addition fact into a subtraction problem, e.g. 8 + 9 = 17 so 17 – 8 = 9 and 17 – 9 = 8.

Ask a partner to write subtraction problem for you and solve it by using your addition skills, e.g.    – 7 = 6, I know the answer is 13 because 6 + 7 = 13 so

13 – 7 = 6.
