Weekly Spellings – est suffix

Below are the spellings for this week’s Spelling Test in Class 2. The theme for this week’s spellings is ‘using the est suffix’.

There are 10 pairs of words to learn (the root word plus the word with the est suffix), also there is an extension challenge to learn an additional 5 pairs of words.

Root word ends in a consonant so add est

  1. thick – thickest
  2. tall – tallest
  3. smart – smartest

Root word ends in an e so add st

  1. close – closest
  2. nice – nicest
  3. large – largest

Root word ends in an y so change the y to an i and add est

  1. heavy – heaviest
  2. happy – happiest

Root word has a short vowel sound so double the consonant and add est

  1. hot – hottest
  2. big – biggest

Extension Challenge – mix of spelling rules for the est suffix

  1. rich – richest
  2. strong – strongest
  3. wide – widest
  4. smelly – smelliest
  5. safe – safest

Additional writing challenge – write these words in a sentence that also contains contracted words (e.g. can’t, I’m, she’ll, won’t)

That huge slice of Christmas Cake was the thickest piece of cake I’ve ever eaten!

Halving and dividing by 2 (Halving and dividing by 2 give the same answer)

Below is an outline of how to develop halving and dividing by 2 skills:

  1. Learn the 2 times table from 0 x 2 = 0 all the way to 15 x 2 = 30.
  2. Learn related division facts, 30 / 2 = 15.
  3. Use the words halving and dividing when calculating division facts, 30 / 2 = 15 so half of 30 is 15 and 30 halved is 15.

Extension Challenge

  1. Extend your division and halving knowledge up to 100. If half of 4 is 2 then half of 40 is 20. If 10 divided by 2 is 5 then 100 divide by 2 is 50.

The tests will be on Friday 11th December.
