Welcome back to the new term and new year in Class 2. Homework procedures will stay the same with weekly spelling and arithmetic tests.

P.E., however, will be on Tuesdays this term.

Weekly Spellings – common exception words 

Below are the spellings for this week’s Spelling Test in Class 2. The theme for this week’s spellings is common exceptions.

Common exception words

Irregular past tense verbs (both words need to be learnt for each example)

4. think – thought
5. swim – swam
6. run – ran
7. catch – caught
8. see – saw
9. fly – flew
10. eat – ate

Additional writing challenge – write these words in a question

Arithmetic – Quartering numbers

Quartering and dividing by 4 (Quartering and dividing by 4 give the same answer)

Below is an outline of how to develop quartering and dividing by 4 skills:

1. Count in 4s up to 40 and write down all these numbers – 0, 4, 8, etc.
2. Halve all the numbers you wrote down, and then halve them again. You have now quartered these numbers.
3. One quarter of a number is the same as dividing by 4, so if one quarter of 8 is 2 then 8 divided by 4 = 2.

Extension Challenge

Extend your division and quartering knowledge up to 100. If one quarter of 8 is 2 then one quarter of 80 is 20.

The tests will be on Friday 15th January.
