Autumn 2 – Week 6

Stars of the week: Anashe and Ethan

This week in year 4, we have worked on our argument skills and related this to Beauty and the Beast. We wrote an argument as to whether we think Beauty should free her sisters after they were frozen in stone for their vanity and selfishness. We had lots of different answers! Some children thought it would be cruel to leave them in stone so they should be allowed to walk around and others thought Beauty should let them go as they are sisters and family comes first.

In science, we have been looking at how switches work. We made our own switches and tested them in a circuit with a bulb, wires and a cell. Most of our switches worked and Class 4 had some really inventive ideas!

We look forward to next week where we will conclude this term and focus on problem solving in maths.

Autumn 2 – Week 5

Stars of the week: Max and Sapphire

This week, we have started off advent in Class 4. We all worked really hard to create our nativity window decorations. We made the houses in Bethlehem using black card and filled the windows with tissue paper. We also made snowflakes, lanterns and bells to decorate our classroom interior.

In English, we have been looking at balanced arguments. We looked at how a writer would give the same amount of reasons for and against something before they come up with their own opinion.

In science, we found out what materials would conduct metal and what would not. We all thought that tin foil would not let electricity pass through (as an insulator) because it’s very flimsy, similar to paper, but we found out the electricity could pass through!

We look forward to carrying on with our multiplication tables next week in maths.

Autumn 2 – Week 4

Stars of the week: Mazin and Joshua

We have had a very busy week this week. We have looked at the inverse of multiplying a number by 10 or 100 and we learned that we need to move it to the right on our place value chart. We then get rid of any extra zeros that we don’t need.

In science, we looked at circuit symbols. Circuit symbols are ways that we can represent a circuit without having to draw each component out in 3D.

In Spanish, we have been focusing on how to introduce ourselves to others. We can now tell others our name and age as well as where we live.

Autumn 2 – Week 3

Stars of the week: Olivia and Yonatan

This week we have started our topic of multiplication and division in maths. We have used Beyoncé to help us multiply by 10 and 100 as we need to move the numbers, “To the left.”

In English, we have been writing sequels to Beauty and the Beast. We had time to look at a narrative example, plan our own sequel and then write it. We will be editing and improving these next week.

In science, we have carried on with our topic of electricity and we have made our own series circuits with a bulb, a battery and wires. We saw what would allow the circuit to work or not.

Autumn 2 – Week 2

Stars of the Week – Isabella and Daniel

We have had a very exciting week in English this week. We started a focus on our class text which is a playscript. Different children read the different parts in the play script of Beauty and the Beast as adapted by Laurence Boswell. We made sure that we all changed our tones of voice to match that of the character we were reading.

In maths, we started looking at perimeter and how we could work out the total of all lengths around a 2D shape. Our Geography lesson allowed us to map out all of the main seas, rivers and mountains that you would find in Europe.

We looked at what foods are healthy and what foods we should eat less off and will use this knowledge to plan our own healthy pizza.

Autumn 2 – Week 1

Stars of the week: Lanre and Stanley

We have had a very exciting first week back to school! In English, we designed our own ‘Wallace and Gromit’ themed machine that would wake and get someone up. There were lots of inventive ideas and we wrote this information into an explanation text to describe how the machine works.

In maths, we finished our topic of addition and subtraction and have started looking at equivalent lengths to start our topic of length and perimeter.

In PSHE we discussed the risks of playing games that we are too young to play and how we can tell why games are rated in a certain way.

We look forward to starting our DT food tech topic where we will start learning about healthy eating and design our own healthy pizzas.

Autumn 1 – Week 7

Stars of the week: Eliana and Henry

We have had a fantastic last week of the half term in Year 4.

In maths we have been learning how to subtract numbers using the column method with multiple exchanges. We wrote a description on a Viking scene in English and used lots of figurative language.

We have finished our topics in Science and History. We made a leaflet to display all the learning that we have done this term in R.E about Judaism.

In art, we have finished our topic of Pablo Picasso and finished our collages based on Pablo’s own work. We used different materials from our time to make simple designs about objects that are interesting to us.

I hope you all have a fantastic break and refresh yourselves for another half term of excellent learning.

Autumn 1 – Week 6

Stars of the week: Helena and Beatrice

This week in class 4, we have fine-tuned our complaint letter skills. We have learned how to add numbers using the column method which means we can now add up two 4-digit numbers with exchanges.

In music, we carried on looking at rhythm and were lucky enough to play some untuned percussion to show the rhythm of a song. We made sure that we could differentiate between the beat and the rhythm which can be very hard to do!

We looked at the story of the freed Jewish slaves in R.E and the commandments that Moses was given by God. We made our own commandments that we live our lives by. In art, we started creating our own cubist paintings with ideas we have taken from Picasso’s collage Guitar, Sheet, Music and Glass.

We look forward to summarising our topic of Judaism next week and showing all of our knowledge in a form of media.

Autumn 1 – Week 5

Stars of the week: Kosi and Maidie

This week in Class 4, we have looked at the system of Roman Numerals and how they don’t make their numbers in the same way we do. We have looked at complaint letters in English and have written our own letters to the Roblox Corporation to suggest that they are stricter with anyone that is not kind online.

In R.E, we went into more detail about the Jewish festival of Passover and what traditions they would have on the evening of Passover. We looked at the importance of various parts of the Seder plate and their significance to Jewish people today.

We continued our focus of Pablo Picasso in art and have planned a collage that we will make next week. We are going to spend the weekend collecting different materials and we are excited to create our collage based on an object of our choosing next week.
