Summer 1 Week 3 – English

Stars of the week: Martha and Thomas

This week in English, Class 4 have started writing their Ancient Greek myths. They considered the most powerful way to open up a story and jump straight into setting the scene. Martha and Thomas came up with some great openers for their myths and we are looking forward to concluding them next week!

In History, Class 4 have been looking at Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses. We studied why they all lived on Mount Olympus, except for Hades who was the God of the Underworld. Next week we are going to be looking at why these figures were so important in Ancient Greek civilisation and how stories were created around them.

Summer 1 Week 2 – Art

Stars of the Week: Shaye and Shia

In Art this week, Class 4 have continued looking at Ancient Greek art – specifically mosaics. They carefully considered the design and texture of famous mosaics , how they are different to collages, and started to plan out one of their own. Class 4 also discussed the reason for mosaics to have contrasting colours for each shape. Shaye considered each of the techniques well and worked hard on creating a mosaic with contrasting coloured pieces of paper.

In History, we looked at the Battle of Marathon. Class 4 discovered who the battle was between (the powerful Persian Empire and Athens) and the victors from the battle. We discussed how the Athenian army were successful in beating the Persians and why Pheidippides ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to share the good news (which is why we have the 26.2 mile marathon race today!) Shia worked very hard to order the events from the Battle of Marathon and considered the many reasons why the Persian Empire wanted to invade.

Summer 1 Week 1 – History

Stars of the Week: Carter and Joni.

Well done to all of Class 4 for settling back into the new term so well.

This week in Class 4 we have started our new History and English topic – Ancient Greece!

In English, we started making predictions about and reading our class text which is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and created some descriptions about some of the terrifying mythical creatures that found within Greek myths.

In History, we discussed the different sources of information that we can use to learn more about a civilisation which is over 2,500 years old! Class 4 looked at artefacts, pictures and paintings and used the internet to investigate Ancient Greek life, and reflected upon which source was most beneficial.

Spring 2 Week 6 – Easter Service

Stars of the Week: All of Class 4.

Well done to all of Class 4 for your incredible Easter Children performance at Southwark Cathedral. You all acted with such maturity and respect, and you have worked so hard for this day. Your singing was brilliant and you all put on a great show. The multiple rounds of applause at the end were exactly what you deserved.

I am so proud of all the hard work and effort you all put into learning your lines, the songs and the choreography. Well done!

Spring 2 Week 5 – DT

Stars of the Week: Fintan and Amaris.

This week in D.T., Class 4 have been designing and creating prototypes of their recycling posters and testing out their mechanisms. They all worked very hard to design different mechanisms and evaluate if they worked within their designs. They were able to make honest reflections and make any necessary changes. Class 4 understood that sometimes in D.T. ideas change and that’s all part of the process!

Next week we are going to be creating our final products, with all the functioning mechanisms and designs.

Spring 2 Week 4 – Theatre Trip to the Unicorn

Stars of the week: Charles and Polina

This week in Class 4, we had a very exciting trip to the Unicorn Theatre to watch Gulliver’s Travels. The children behaved incredibly well and enjoyed watching a alternative version of the story – about a young girl called Grace who wanted to explore the world! The children were able to make links to our work in History and they even spotted a short cameo from Queen Elizabeth I!

Class 4 have also been completing their Maths and English assessments this week. Well done to everyone for working so hard.

In Geography, we have been looking at earthquakes. The children what causes them, and how scientists accurately measure them. Well done to Charles who was so interested in learning more about earthquakes and made some great points about their locations in the world.

In D.T., we have been making our mechanisms for our recycling posters. Class 4 looked at existing examples and attempted to make some mechanisms of their own.

Spring 2 Week 3 – Maths

Stars of the Week: Parker and Bea.

This week in Class 4, we have started our topic of fractions. The children recapped what a fraction means and how it can be represented in shapes. They explored the classroom, looking at different shapes and wrote down the numerators and denominators to create the fractions.

In Geography, we looked at the location of volcanoes and how they are formed by the movement of tectonic plates. The children mapped out various volcanoes on a map and labelled the tectonic plates.

Spring 2 Week 2 – World Book Week!

Stars of the week – Nifemi and Margot

This week in Class 4, we have been getting our dragon teeth and claws stuck into our class text – How to Train a Dragon. We discussed the different ways we could trap a dragon and started to write a setting description about the dark and damp cavern that all the dragons are asleep in.

On Thursday, Class 4 had a brilliant writing workshop with two fantastic authors – Jan Burchett & Sara Volger. The children enjoyed listening to the adventures of Sam Silver, and the different characters he meets along the way.  The children loved drawing and describing their own sea monsters and are going to progress onto writing out some great narratives.

Thank you Jan and Sara for such a great, interesting and engaging writing workshop!

Spring 2 Week 1 – Maths

Stars of the Week: Deborah and Ben

In Maths this week, Class 4 have been continuing their work on division and understanding the method when dividing 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Next week, we are going to progress onto division calculations with remainders and then start our new topic of area.

Also, Class 4 have been working very hard with rehearsals for their Easter performance. A special well done goes to Deborah who has worked especially hard to learn all of her lines and lyrics to the songs.

Spring 1 Week 6 – Art

Stars of the Week: Amelia and Saraea

This week, Class 4 have been decorating their pinch pots in the style of Yayoi Kusama. They carefully considered the contrasting colours to include, to make sure the spots stood out from the background. Amelia and Saraea took particular care and time to add their dots onto their pots and they all look brilliant.

In History this week, Class 4 have been learning about the Spanish Armada. We looked at the reasons for the battle between Prince Phillip II of Spain and Queen Elizabeth I of England. The children created a timeline of the key events and then produced a TV News report about the historical battle. Well done Class 4 for some great performances.
