Caterpillars and Cocoons!

This week in Reception we have been learning about the caterpillar and butterfly lifecycle.

We learned a song to help us know what happens next in their lifecycle. It goes like this:

“First comes a butterfly and lays an egg,
Out comes a caterpillar with many legs,
Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin,
A little chrysalis to sleep in.

Oh, oh ,oh wait and see
oh oh oh wait and see
Out of the chrysalis,my oh my
out comes a pretty butterfly”

We have also been excitedly watching some Painted Lady Butterfly Caterpillars growing from about 1cm long to now being about 5cm long!

We have really enjoyed watching them crawl around as well as seeing them grow right before our eyes!

Here are some photos of the caterpillars! Stay tuned for photos of what happens next!

Xavier has been telling us all about the caterpillars, and the cocoons they are going to build.

I am a little scared of caterpillars (it’s the way they move…) so I am looking forward to them becoming beautiful butterflies!
