Playmakers

footballSome of our Year 5 children attended some borough-wide training to enable them to lead games in the school playground. As well as learning new games they also had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, working with children from schools across Southwark.

Please let us know which skills you developed?

Could you tell us about the games you learnt?

Amazing Animals

SONY DSCToday Class 2 hosted a menagerie of nocturnal animals courtesy of Rob and Jason at Reptile Life. The children spent the morning handling the animals and learning some incredible facts. Every class had the opportunity to view the animals including a skunk, fox cub, tarantula and a pair of hoglets. For more photos please visit Class 2’s blog.

Please share your animal facts or tell us which nocturnal animal was your favourite and why.

Remember to use ambitious vocabulary.

One of the best in the country for pupil progress and achievement.

The school has received national recognition for the value it adds to its pupils’ high achievement in the key stage 2 tests.

A recent in-depth analysis of official Department for Education data on all state-funded schools in England by SSAT, the national schools’ membership organisation for improvement and collaboration, identified The Cathedral School of St Saviour and St Mary Overy’s success.

SSATThe school has qualified for two SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards by being in the top 20% of primary schools nationally their pupils’ high attainment, and in the top 20% for progress made by pupils between their key stage 1 tests, taken at age seven, and their key stage 2 tests, taken at age 11.

The school has been invited to receive their award at a regional celebration ceremony hosted by SSAT at The St Marylebone CE School in London on 06 May.

Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT said:

‘The Cathedral School of St Saviour and St Mary Overy should be congratulated for their exceptional achievement. They have proved themselves to be leading the field in improving outcomes for their pupils. There is so much good practice that this school could share, and I hope many schools will join us at the celebration ceremony for the chance to network and share strategies with award-winning schools.

‘These results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership team at The Cathedral School of St Saviour and St Mary Overy, and show what can be achieved when skilled teachers have high expectations and ambition for every child. I am proud that this school is a member of the SSAT network.’

The Centenary Poppy Campaign at Downing St.

The school was honoured to be chosen by The Royal British Legion to plant poppy seeds in the rose garden at 10 Downing St. today as part of the Centenary Poppy Campaign.

Children this morning went to the Prime Minister’s London residence and planted poppy seeds with David Cameron to promote the nationwide appeal to cover the UK with poppies during the centenary period in commemoration of all those who lost their lives in the First World War.

The school’s representatives were confident and assured as they spoke to the Prime Minister and the assembled media about the first World War. Mr Cameron commented that the children were very knowledgeable and ‘knew their dates’, while Number 10’s digital press officer was impressed the children’s confidence and articulacy.

What made the day even more exciting was the children had no idea who they were going to meet until they turned up at the famous black door. They were taken up the grand staircase, passing pictures of every past Prime Minister, and enjoyed refreshments until the Prime Minister was scheduled to meet us.

As well as planting some seeds in the rose garden itself, we also planted some in troughs which we brought back to school to grow here.

The school would like to thank Helen and Becky from The Royal British Legion for giving us this wonderful opportunity and to the staff of Number 10 for making the children feel very welcome in such as special building. We hope we helped to heighten awareness of the campaign.

Curriculum Questionnaire

Dear Children, Parents and Governors,

With the implementation of the new National Curriculum in September 2014, we are very excited to have the opportunity to develop our own curriculum at Cathedral School. We already have many fantastic topics and learning opportunities at school and we would like to extend this further as we take the new curriculum into account. As part of this we would like to listen and take on board your family’s views to help us develop our curriculum.

We would be very grateful if you could fill out this questionnaire with your child by Wednesday 2nd April.
Many thanks for your time. We are very much looking forward to sharing all the new learning opportunities your children will experience with you soon.

Opening the Hummingbird Centre

Recently a pupil from Cathedral School was invited to St Thomas’ Hospital to help open the brand new Young People and Children’s Audiology Centre, called the Hummingbird Centre.

This is what said about the honour,

“On Wednesday afternoon my dad said something exciting was going to happen the following day. I couldn’t guess what is was and when he said that I was going to open a new clinic in St Thomas’ Hospital for the care of children with hearing loss, I thought, ‘Wow! Amazing! Fantastic!’

When it was time we were taken upstairs and there were some people waiting. The sign language person was my favourite because the way he did the sign language was encouraging. I liked the patterns of his hands and fingers.

I met a professor but I can’t remember his name, he was very kind and I shook his hand. He told me that I was a very lucky lad!

The professor said that I should help him open the centre because it is for children. There was red curtain that was shut and I had to pull a cord which opened the curtain and there was a plaque under the curtain. On the plaque there was writing which announced the new name The Hummingbird Centre (one lady thought that my name should be on the plaque too!)

Everybody clapped, I felt proud, more than proud! And Lottie, my teacher from Hearing Support Service was even more proud than that!”

Book Day

Book Day

Please click on the above image to view a full list of books you can buy with you World Book Day token.

Today the children and staff at Cathedral School dressed up as their favourite book characters and authors. The effort and creativity that went into the costumes was staggering. The staff were so impressed with the fact that all children could not only name the character they had dressed up as but that they could also describe them and talk about the story they appear in.

Some children chose to dress up as characters from a text studied at school (The Hobbit, Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz, Oliver Twist).

At Cathedral School we feel that one of the best things about World Book Day is discovering new authors and remembering forgotten favourites A very exciting part of the day was the ‘Choose a story session’. Children were able to choose a story from a selection before finding out which teacher would read it to them.

Which book did you choose to listen to?
Why did you choose it? Would you recommend it to others?
