World Cup 2014

As well as being a festival of football (do you like the alliteration there!), the World Cup in Brazil this year gives us an opportunity to extend our thinking in different areas. Below are two creative thinking challenges, one is based on mathematics and the other is based on international affairs and politics.

Challenge Number 1

Can you suggest a reason why there have been mass protests and demonstrations by the people of Brazil against the World Cup being hosted in their country. Most people across the world see the World Cup as a celebration and as lots of fun, but a large number of people in Brazil have the opposite view – why do you think this is? Write your answer in the comments section below.

Challenge Number 2

What is the lowest number of points a team can gain and still qualify from the group stages into the knockout stages? Is it possible to qualify without winning a game?

Once you’ve solved that problem think about this one, what is the highest number of points a team can gain and still not qualify from the group stages into the knockout stages?

Don’t forget to explain your answer in full and write it in the comments section below.

The reason why some people in Brazil don’t want the world cup in their country is because they have spent lots of money on the it and lots of tax money comes from the poor people. Also they are hosting the Olympics and lots of money will go towards that, so it isn’t fair that their little amount of the money is just going towards football and sport.

The reason why they don’t want the world cup to be held in Brazil is because it costs billions of pounds. It paid for by their taxes so that’s why protest.

Challenge 1: the reason is that too much money is being spent. As well as the World Cup, they are hosting the Olympics and it costs too much and the poor people’s money might go towards the Olympics and the World Cup.

The Brazilians don’t won’t to be hosting the World Cup and the next Olympics, because it takes away so much money that they could be spending on better life supplies. I think that those 2 events could be responsible for a few deaths because of how much money they are wasting. Personally I think that the World Cup should be transferred to a different country.

The reason why lots of people in Brazil don`t want the World Cup to be in their country is because of the money. Lots of people think they should be using that for schools or hospitals.

Many Brazilians think it is a dramatic waste of money! They think that the stadiums that are being used in the World Cup aren’t ever going to be used again in a long time!

The reason why the Brazilians don’t want the world cup to happen is because the Brazilian government are spending a lot of money on the whole thing, plus they take money out of people’s bank accounts and they have to pay their tax, bills and their childrens school fees.

    Task 2

I think that the smallest amount of points you can get is 3, 1 win

I know that if you don’t win a match you’d have to draw it or lose it
If you drew 3 you would earn 3 points

    1 earns 3, 2 earns 7, 3 earns 2 and 4 earns 2
1 draws all of his matches
2 draws against 1 but wins all their other matches
3 will lose against 2 and draw against 1 and 4
4 wil lose against 2 and draw against 1 and 3

So this theory is true because 1 hasn’t won a single match and yet go thought to the knock out stages.

And the final question is 2.

Challenge 1: The reason why some people in Brazil didn’t want Brazil to hold the World Cup is because every time Brazil hosts the World Cup they have to build stadiums which takes up a lot of people’s money and now a lot of people can’t afford to buy many things and some parents can’t even afford to pay their children’s school fees; and that’s why some Brazilians don’t want to Brazil to host the World Cup.

    Challenge One:
The reason why some people in Brazil don’t want the World Cup their because it is to much money and people would have to build everything and it isn’t fair because all that money could go over for good schools, good roads and enough food.  They are also holding the Olympics there in 2016 so they would be spending more and more money.

The reason Brazilian people don’t want anymore football matches or anything to do with football is because it takes away a lot of their money because they have to build a stadium for everyone. But then they only use it for 2-3 weeks and then they don’t use it anymore so they wasted their money building a stadium which was only used for 2-3 weeks. And then they don’t have enough money for houses, rent and taxes.

The reason why the Brazilians don’t want the World Cup is because it is using too much money to just build a stadium that will only be used for 2-3 weeks and probably not be used again. The money being used to build a stadium could be going to hospitals and good education for peoples children.

I think that some Brazilians don’t want the world cup hosted in their country because of the money. They are going to host the Olympics in 2016 which will cost a lot of money as well. It’s too much and would be better spent on other stuff. All the excitement also makes their streets a whole lot busier and might lead traffic jams or other inconvenient things.

The Brazilian are poor and it take a lots of money to build stadiums. They need the money for a better standard of living.

    Task 2
To qualify a team needs at least 4 points.

The Brazil World Cup is really exciting but I actually agree that they shouldn`t host it because they should care more about their own lives rather than a football game and an expensive stadium. Their life is more important than anything else even if it is something really exciting and fun and plus in 2 years time they will be hosting the Olympics as-well so that’s too much money wasted on football games, equipment and stadiums.

People in Brazil are protesting because they disagree on so much money being spent on only football. The decision to have the World Cup in Brazil this year has cut like a knife the feelings and opinions in majorly into two groups. The first group has got their heart racing from the excitement, famous lively beaches Copacabana, Ipanema, rhythms of Brazilian music, football games, life like a party, as they are imagining it. The other group is alarmed by reality; Brazil is not such a wealthy country and the people need money in other areas, schools, hospitals, houses, they need food and essential things.

In some places, Olympic stadiums have been built and they will never be used again. This is such a waste of money and it is hitting the Brazilians. The rest of the world will come, enjoy the games and go home, forgetting about the budget of Brazil. It is the people of Brazil who will suffer this extravagant splurge of money. In two years, Brazil is hosting the Olympics, which only aggravates the problem. As a conclusion, if the world really wants both events hosted in and by a country that is struggling financially, they could collect some money from various sources and help in building, training and all other costs. As for the future, choose really carefully what events are being held where and if the people approve it.
