Nepal

 

Class 2 are learning about Nepal this half-term. They are enjoying learning about a country that is very different to England. Did you know, Nepal is the only country in the world with a flag with this shape?

They have enjoyed learning about the tallest mountain in the world – Mount Everest – which is in Nepal

They have been learning about the capital city – Kathmandu – and thinking how it is similar and different to London.

Weekly Spellings – plural words

Below are the spellings for this week’s Spelling Test in Class 2. The theme for this week’s spellings is – plural words. The children need to know the spelling of all words, however the test will only include the plural words.

Plural es – words ending with ch, x, sh, ss, s

Arithmetic – equivalent calculations

Below is an outline of how to write equivalent calculations

  1. Write down a multiplication calculation, e.g. 3 x 5 = 15
  2. Write a different calculation that gives the same answer, e.g. 10 + 5 = 15
  3. Write the two calculations in one number sentence, e.g. 3 x 5 = 10 + 5

Extension Challenge

Writing greater than calculations using the greater than sign >

  1. Write down a multiplication calculation, e.g. 3 x 5 = 15
  2. Write a different calculation that gives a smaller answer, e.g. 10 – 4 = 6
  3. Write the two calculations in one number sentence, e.g. 3 x 5 > 10 – 4

Below is an outline of how to make totals

  1. Write down any 2-digit number, e.g. 36.
  2. Partition it in to tens and units, e.g. 30 and 6 (3 tens and 6 units)
  3. Make the same number in five different ways, e.g. 20 + 10 + 6; 15 + 15 + 3 + 3; 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1; 29 + 7; 25 + 11.

Extension Challenge

Make the same number using coins, e.g. 20p + 10p + 5p + 1p; 10p + 10p + 10p + 2p + 2p + 2p

The Tiny Seed

 

 

 

Class 2 are reading the book The Tiny Seed written by Eric Carle.

They are studying the structure of the story, including the way it starts and ends in Autumn and the way the story progresses through the different seasons.

They are learning how the settings are described by the author, like when he uses short sentences to give the writing more impact, for example: It is Autumn. A strong wind blew.

They will be writing their own 500-word story based on the Tiny Seed to be entered into a story writing competition.

The story also helps us to learn more in our science unit as well. As it teaches us about plant life cycles and seasonal changes.

Multiplying and dividing by three

Below is an outline of how to develop multiplication and division skills

  1. Count in 3s up to 36 and write down all these numbers – 0, 3, 6, etc.
  2. Write the 3 times table in order – 0 x 3 = 0, 1 x 3 = 3, etc
  3. Write 3 times table facts in both different forms – 3 x 4 = 12 and 4 x 3 = 12
  4. Write the 3 times table in random order – 3 x 9 = 27, 5 x 3 = 15, etc

Learn related division facts – 15 / 5 = 3 and 15 / 3 = 5

Arithmetic – Quartering numbers

Quartering and dividing by 4 (Quartering and dividing by 4 give the same answer)

Below is an outline of how to develop quartering and dividing by 4 skills:

  1. Count in 4s up to 40 and write down all these numbers – 0, 4, 8, etc.
  2. Halve all the numbers you wrote down, and then halve them again. You have now quartered these numbers.
  3. One quarter of a number is the same as dividing by 4, so if one quarter of 8 is 2 then 8 divided by 4 = 2.

Extension Challenge

Extend your division and quartering knowledge up to 100. If one quarter of 8 is 2 then one quarter of 80 is 20.
