Reptile Life

Yesterday the whole school were joined by Rob and Johnny from Reptile Life. Every child from Nursery to Year 6 had the opportunity to learn about the habitats of a wide range of animals including Charlotte, a Chilean rose tarantula, Dave the royal python, Walter the Burmese python) and a barn owl named Dexter. Children were also able to handle the animals.

Here are some comments from Class 4,

“I really enjoyed this animal project! Most of us got to hold a whole python that was 3.4m long which is amazing!”

“I  liked seeing the animals, the python was 3.4ms long. Charlotte was a tarantula; they can live until they are 15 or 16, and male tarantulas can only live until they are 5 or 6! Thank you Rob and Johnny for letting us hold and stroke the animals!”

“I really enjoyed today, I learnt new facts and got to be close up to wild animals. My favourite animal was the the tenrec, they are adorable.”

Please see individual class blogs for more photos.

What did you learn? Which animal did you hold? How did it feel?

Curriculum Evenings

It was wonderful to see so many parents at the Curriculum Evenings this week.

These evenings are designed to help parents support their child’s learning at home.

If you were unable to attend, don’t worry, you will be able to collect any handouts from the meeting at Parents Evening next Wednesday and Thursday.

What did you find most useful about the Curriculum Evenings? This will help us when we are planning our next one.

Harvest

During our assemblies this half term we have been thinking about Harvest. This year we will be giving all contributions to the FareShare London which supports over 100 charities right across the capital, helping to feed vulnerable people including families on low incomes and people affected by homelessness, mental health problems or disabilities. Children will be asked to bring in donations of food during the week beginning 20th October. The FareShare Project have requested the following items: tea, coffee, sugar, tinned meat, tinned fish, baked beans, tinned fruit or vegetables.

Gardening Champions

Congratulations to Kim and Gardening Club who won 3 rosettes at last Friday’s Octavia Hill Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show in Redcross Gardens. Our rhubarb cordial and rhubard and ginger jam were awarded runner-up rosettes and our giant marrow won the prize for the largest vegetable. This will be eaten as part of school lunch soon.

Target Day

Today is Target Day here at Cathedral School.

Targets are set for reading, writing and maths and they are based on the 2014 National Curriculum. .

Targets are:

  • Challenging
  • Achievable
  • Personalised
  • Based on assessment data and teacher judgement

What is your reading/writing/maths target?

What are you going to do at school to reach your targets?

What are you going to do at home to help you meet and exceed your targets?

World Faiths Week

During our first week back, Cathedral School has been a hive of activity for World Faiths Week. Throughout the week the children have been investigating faiths from around the world and on Thursday we were very happy to welcome Father Andrew into Class 6, as well as Krishna from Hinduism Workshops for Schools who ran a workshop on the Hindu Faith for Classes 1 to 5. We practised traditional Hindu face painting, learnt how to tie saris and turbans, found out about the Gods of the faith and some of the stories about them.
It has been a great opportunity to have hands-on experiences, investigate something new or develop a more profound understanding.

What have you learnt during World Faiths Week?
