Choir Performance

On Tuesday the choir were asked to  perform at a memorial service for Sir David Hart OBE, who was the General Secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers. Maxine Briggs from the NAHT send the following message,

“Thank you so very much for attending the memorial service with your wonderful choir.  What lovely children, they really are something to be proud of, and not only did they sing like angels which made me cry (!) but they sat so still and were very well behaved for the entire service, all your hard work clearly pays off. Please thank the parent helpers from us and most importantly say a special thank you to those lovely children!  I have received a lot of compliments about the choir.”

Today we held an assembly about harvest and Fruits of the Spirit. We discussed how once again the school will be assisting the Manna Day Centre.

RRS Award Level 2

RRSA20logo20small

We are delighted to have been awarded the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award, Level 2. This is a very prestigious award and the assessment process was very rigorous. We are the first school in Southwark to have been awarded it.

Special thanks must go to Miss Hayfield for leading the application for the award and being a wonderful ambassador for the school’s rights respecting ethos. They were particularly impressed by the fact that all of the staff, parents, children and governors were actively involved. The assessors enjoyed meeting children, staff, parents and governors and have sent us a glowing 8 page report (please find attached). The report mentioned lots of things we do in school and directly quoted parents, staff and children – it’s well worth a read.
”There is a calm, orderly family atmosphere in the school and the assessors witnessed both adults and pupils holding open doors, and expressing gratitude and encouragement. Pupils clearly enjoy good relationships with the adults and hold them in high regard.”
The assessors especially thanked EVERYONE for the warm welcome.

London’s Biggest Breakfast

Breakfast

This morning the Year 5 choir sang at Roast in Borough Market to help raise money for the London’s Biggest Breakfast initiative, organised by the Mayor’s Fund for London. The children sang a number of songs for diners who contributed generously.

The event was organised in response to the following statement:

Many children come to school too hungry to learn. Research shows that 1 in 4 children have only one healthy meal a day (school lunch) and 32% of school children regularly miss breakfast.

£5 buys breakfast for a child for a month.

Once again well done to our Class 5 singers and many thanks to the staff at Roast who made us feel so welcome and provided us with a tasty breakfast.

Welcome Back

NewSchoolLogo As a staff we have all enjoyed welcoming the children back to school today and hearing about their holidays. The day started with a welcome back assembly that focused on what it means to belong to Cathedral School. The children had some thoughtful ideas including:

 • We aim high
 • We work hard
 • We eat healthy school dinners
 • We let others enjoy our games
 • We play gently with each other in the playground
 • We sing beautifully
 • We LOVE learning new things

Beauty and the Beast 2013

Year 6, supported by Year 5, were the toast of SE1 as they performed Disney’s Beauty and the Beast over three sell-out nights.

The performances were of an incredible high quality with all cast members’ talent, maturity and energy shining through.

Thanks to the 300+ people who saw the production and supported the two classes.

Here’s a few pictures to remind you of the ‘Tale as old as time’.

Southwark Excellent Teaching awards

It was Southwark Council’s teaching awards last week and the Cathedral School choir was chosen to sing at the event.

The choir have been training hard with Miss Dace and their songs for the evening were beautifully pitched and very well received. Some were even four part rounds and others features complex harmonies.

Thanks to the parents of the choir members for their support in picking their children up from the town hall.

In another achievement for the school, Miss Scade and Mr Scott received an excellent teacher award for their outstanding teaching over the last few years.

It was lovely that some of Cathedral School could see them accept the glass trophies from the Mayor.

Junior Road Safety Officers

Thank you to our Junior Road Safety Officers from Years 3,4,5 and 6 who led assembly this morning. They reminded us how to cross the road safely and then gave us a quiz to check that we had understood. If you would like to learn more about road safety or take part in some road safety activities please click on this picture. Do you have some advice about how to cross the road safely?
